Why the Canola Fields Are One of My Favourite Winter Photoshoot Locations in Cape Town

Every photographer has that one location they quietly count down to all year.
Not because it's the easiest place to photograph.
Not because it's the most famous location in Cape Town.
But because it only exists for a brief moment before nature gently closes the curtain once again.
For me, that place is the breath-taking canola fields that blanket parts of the Western Cape every winter.
Every year, almost overnight, the countryside undergoes an extraordinary transformation. Hills that were green only days before suddenly become seas of vibrant golden flowers stretching endlessly towards the horizon. It's as though winter decides to surprise us with one final burst of colour before spring arrives.
There is something almost dreamlike about standing amongst thousands upon thousands of tiny yellow flowers, watching them sway gently in the breeze while Cape Town's crisp winter air surrounds you.
The landscape feels peaceful.
Quiet.
Untouched.

And no matter how many times I photograph these fields, they never lose their magic.
Perhaps it's because I know how fleeting they are.
Unlike beaches, forests or mountain viewpoints that are waiting for us all year round, the canola fields ask us to slow down and appreciate them while we can.
They don't stay for months.
They don't bloom when it's convenient.
They don't wait for our busy schedules to clear.
For just a few precious weeks each winter, they remind us that some of nature's most beautiful gifts are also its most temporary.
Maybe that's exactly why I love photographing here so much.
Because every session feels a little bit like capturing something that won't quite look the same ever again.
My First Canola Session of the Season
There's a particular kind of excitement that comes with the very first canola session of the year.
Long before the flowers are ready, I find myself checking the fields almost weekly. You start noticing tiny patches of yellow appearing here and there, wondering if this will finally be the week they explode into bloom.
Then one morning, almost as if nature has quietly worked overnight, the landscape is transformed.
The rolling hills are no longer simply green.
They're glowing.
The countryside becomes covered in thousands of delicate yellow flowers, and suddenly one of my favourite photography seasons has officially begun.
This year's first yellow flower session couldn't have been a more beautiful way to welcome the season.
Kaylie arrived with her trusted steed, Satindah, ready to embrace everything that makes winter in Cape Town so special.
What made this session even more memorable was the weather.
When we arrived that morning, a blanket of soft winter mist hung over the fields. The horizon almost disappeared into the fog, and everything felt wonderfully still and peaceful. There wasn't a dramatic sunrise or bright blue sky overhead—just calm, diffused winter light gently filtering through the mist.
It's exactly the kind of weather many people worry about when they think of booking a winter photoshoot.
But this session became the perfect reminder of why photographers often love these conditions.
The mist acted like nature's own giant softbox, wrapping Kaylie and Satindah in the most beautiful, even light imaginable. There were no harsh shadows, no squinting into bright sunshine, and no distractions competing with the moment.
Instead, the soft light created photographs that feel timeless, intimate, and wonderfully atmospheric.
Looking across the field, the golden flowers seemed to stretch endlessly into the mist, creating an almost ethereal backdrop. Satindah's rich light bay coat stood out beautifully against the muted yellow blooms, while Kaylie's simple white shirt and earthy tones allowed the landscape—and more importantly, the connection between horse and rider—to remain the hero of every image.
One of my favourite moments from the morning was simply watching them together.
There was no need for elaborate posing.
No forced smiles.
No manufactured moments.
Just quiet conversation between a girl and the horse who knows her better than words ever could.
You can see it in the way Satindah gently lowers his head towards Kaylie.
The way she smiles without even looking at the camera.
The quiet trust that's been built over countless rides, early mornings, muddy boots, competitions, and ordinary days spent together.
Those are the moments I photograph.
The flowers simply frame the story.
As the morning unfolded, the mist slowly lifted ever so slightly, revealing more of the rolling countryside without ever losing that dreamy softness. Looking at the finished gallery now, it's hard to believe the morning was so overcast. If anything, those gentle winter conditions gave us some of the most beautiful light imaginable.
It's proof that perfect photographs don't require perfect weather.
Sometimes they simply require trusting the season.
And standing there amongst Cape Town's very first golden blooms of the year, photographing such a beautiful partnership between Kaylie and Satindah, I was reminded exactly why I count down to canola season every single winter.
Because for just a few precious weeks, Cape Town becomes home to one of the most extraordinary natural photography backdrops imaginable.
And before you know it...
The flowers are gone again.

Nature Waits for No One
There is something beautifully humbling about working outdoors.
As photographers, we can choose our cameras, our lenses, our editing style and our locations.
But nature always has the final say.
The canola flowers bloom exactly when they're meant to.
They remind us that not everything can be postponed.
Not everything can be recreated.
Some moments simply arrive, invite us to enjoy them, and then quietly disappear.
It's a gentle reminder that life works much the same way.
Our children grow.
Our dogs get older.
Horses we thought would be with us forever eventually become treasured memories.
Families change.
Relationships evolve.
The flowers become a symbol of something much bigger.
A reminder that this season of your life deserves to be remembered while you're living it.

Don't Let This Be the Year You Miss Them
Every winter, Cape Town gives us a brief window to photograph one of its most spectacular natural displays.
Then it's gone.
If you've always imagined your family running through fields of yellow flowers, your dog happily exploring amongst the blooms, your horse standing proudly against a golden landscape, or simply celebrating this chapter of your life in a setting unlike any other, don't wait until next month.
Because next month, the flowers will most likely be gone.
Every year someone tells me,
"I wish I had booked."
This year, let that story belong to someone else.
Instead, let this be the year you said yes.
The year you embraced the season.
The year you created memories surrounded by Cape Town's most magical winter landscape.
Because the flowers may only bloom for a few short weeks...
But the photographs will bloom in your memories for a lifetime.
