What to Expect and How to Prepare
There’s something truly special about capturing the soul of a beloved pet in a photograph. Whether it’s your pup’s playful grin, your cat’s quiet stare, or the gentle connection between you and your horse, a professional pet photoshoot turns these fleeting moments into lasting memories. But for many pet owners, the idea of getting their furry friend to sit still or “pose” for a camera can feel daunting.
That’s where I come in.
At Ashley Chapman Photography, I’ve had the joy of working with pets of all kinds—from curious kittens to high-energy dogs, gentle giants, rescue animals, horses in their paddocks, and even camera-shy pets with a bit of a wild streak. With the right mix of preparation, patience, and a little magic, your photoshoot can be a relaxed, fun experience—no matter your pet’s personality.

Step One: Booking Your Shoot
Every session begins with a quick consultation, either over the phone or via email. I want to get to know your pet before we even meet. Are they shy around strangers? Do they love the beach or prefer staying close to home? Knowing your pet’s habits and personality helps me tailor the shoot to their comfort.
We’ll also decide on a location together. I have a list of beautiful, pet-friendly spots around Cape Town and the Western Cape—beaches, flower fields, mountain trails, or even your own garden. I’ll offer location ideas based on your pet’s temperament and the overall vibe you’re going for. Once we’ve locked in a date, I’ll send you a detailed prep guide to help you feel confident and ready.
Preparing for the Big Day: My Top 5 Tips for a Stress-Free Pet Photoshoot
1. Bring Their Favourite Treats and Toys
High-value treats are a game-changer. Not only do they help with posing, but they also turn the whole experience into something positive and rewarding for your pet. A beloved toy also helps draw their attention and adds an element of play to the shoot.
2. Practice Simple Commands
Even if your dog (or cat!) only knows “sit” and “stay,” that’s plenty to start. If they don’t know any commands, don’t worry—many of my favourite shots are completely candid, and I work with what your pet gives me. I’ve developed quiet techniques for getting natural expressions, without forcing anything.
3. Choose the Right Time of Day
Just like people, pets have their own rhythms. Let me know when your pet tends to be the most relaxed or energetic. For puppies, mornings often work best. For older pets or easily overstimulated animals, a calm late-afternoon session during golden hour might be ideal.
4. Groom, but Don’t Overdo It
A light brushing and clean-up around the eyes and mouth goes a long way. If your pet is due for grooming, consider scheduling it a few days before the shoot, so they have time to settle and feel like themselves again.
5. Stay Calm and Trust the Process
Your pet takes cues from you. If you’re relaxed and enjoying the moment, chances are they will too. I move at your pet’s pace, and I know when to pause, let them sniff the grass, or have a moment of play.
On the Day of the Shoot
When we arrive at the location, I never rush. I give your pet time to explore and get familiar with me and the environment. Building that initial trust makes all the difference. Some pets jump right in, while others need a little time—and that’s totally fine.
We’ll ease into the shoot, and I’ll use a mix of candid and lightly guided shots to bring out the best in your pet. I’ll encourage natural interactions—tug games, cuddles, leash walks—and also capture those still, heartfelt moments.
Here’s what some of my wonderful clients have shared:

Working with Different Kinds of Pets
Every animal is different. Dogs are often eager and expressive, while cats require a gentler, more subtle approach. Horses, on the other hand, bring an entirely different energy—calm, majestic, and sometimes unpredictable. My job is to adapt my technique to suit your pet. I’ve photographed pets mid-zoomie, mid-yawn, and mid-snuggle—and I love every second of it.
If your pet has special needs, is reactive, or has anxiety, please don’t hesitate to let me know in advance. I create a safe, pressure-free environment for all animals, and I’m happy to make any adjustments necessary for their comfort.
After the Shoot: The Final Touches
Once your session wraps up, the real magic begins behind the scenes. I go through all the images, carefully selecting the best moments—the ones where their eyes sparkle, ears perk up, or tails wag mid-motion.
Each selected image is professionally edited with attention to light, detail, and the natural beauty of your pet. I remove any distracting background elements, enhance colour and contrast, and deliver a stunning gallery that’s easy to view and download.

Why It’s Worth It
Our pets aren’t with us forever—but the love they give us, the laughter, the quiet companionship—that lasts a lifetime. Capturing those memories in timeless images is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.
Whether it’s your first pet shoot or your tenth, I’ll walk you through the process with care, creativity, and an eye for those beautiful in-between moments.
So if you’ve been putting it off or wondering if your pet is “ready,” the answer is yes. They’re ready. And I’d love to help you tell their story.
