There’s something incredibly special about returning to the same family year after year and watching their story unfold in the most natural, heartfelt way. Michelle’s family Christmas shoot has become one of those traditions I truly look forward to every festive season — and somehow, every single year, they manage to outdo themselves. As a family photographer in Cape Town, moments like these are exactly why in-home sessions hold such a special place in my heart.

This year’s shoot once again took place in the comfort of their home, which always adds a deeper layer of meaning to family photography. Their space was filled with warmth, laughter, and the most beautifully curated Christmas setup. The tree stood tall and full, dressed in elegant golds, soft neutrals, deep greens, and timeless festive ornaments. Wrapped gifts nestled underneath, plush textures layered throughout the room, and warm ambient light created an atmosphere that felt intimate, cosy, and effortlessly luxurious — the perfect backdrop for authentic family photography in Cape Town.

One of the things I love most about photographing families at home is how relaxed everyone feels. Children can move freely, pets feel comfortable, and genuine moments naturally unfold. This session was no exception — and speaking of pets, Michelle’s beloved French Bulldogs once again made sure they were very much part of the celebration. Dressed in the cutest bow ties, they sat proudly by the tree, occasionally stealing the spotlight and adding a playful, joyful energy to the shoot. Including pets in family photography always adds an extra layer of personality, and these two are truly part of the family.

This year marked a beautiful new chapter for little GiGi. Now walking, she brought an entirely new dynamic to the session. Watching her confidently explore the room, toddle between the tree and the presents, and interact with the dogs added such a fresh and lively feel to the images. Her smile — that sweet, expressive smile — was everything. It lit up every frame and perfectly captured the magic of this stage of her life.

GiGi and her mom were both dressed in gold this year, and it was such a stunning choice. Their outfits complemented the décor beautifully and added a timeless, editorial feel to the session. There’s something incredibly special about coordinating outfits in a way that feels intentional but not forced — and this was a perfect example of how styling can elevate family photography while still keeping it authentic and emotional.

Throughout the shoot, we captured tender moments between mother and daughter, candid laughter, quiet cuddles, and those fleeting in-between moments that so often become the most treasured memories. The mix of warm colour images and emotive black-and-white frames allowed the emotion of the day to truly shine through — moments of curiosity, comfort, joy, and deep connection.

Photographing Michelle’s family every Christmas has become more than just an annual photoshoot. It’s a visual record of their story — one year at a time. From evolving décor and thoughtful outfits to watching GiGi grow into her own little personality, each session reflects a new chapter while staying rooted in love and tradition.

As a family photographer in Cape Town, being invited into a family’s home year after year is an honour I never take lightly. Michelle, thank you for trusting me once again to capture your family’s Christmas magic. Your sessions are a beautiful reminder of why preserving these moments matters so deeply — and I already can’t wait to see what next year brings.
