A Meaningful Engagement Shoot at Misty Cliffs, Cape Town

There are some photoshoots where the location is simply a beautiful backdrop, and then there are photoshoots where the location is part of the story.

Kayla and her fiancé’s engagement shoot at Misty Cliffs in Cape Town was definitely the latter.

This beautiful couple chose Misty Cliffs because it is a place that holds so much meaning for them. They spend a lot of time here together, making memories, walking along the sand and simply enjoying being together away from the busyness of everyday life.

So when Kayla asked me to photograph their engagement session at their favourite beach, I knew this shoot was going to be something special.

What I didn't know was that I was about to discover a little Cape Town gem that I had somehow never come across before!

Discovering Misty Cliffs

I have photographed in so many beautiful locations around Cape Town, but Misty Cliffs was completely new to me.

It's a small, isolated stretch of coastline with a wonderfully wild and untouched feeling. Unlike some of Cape Town's more well-known beaches, there is something incredibly peaceful about this little spot.

There are no crowds competing for space in the background. No busy promenade. No rows of restaurants or cafés.

Just sand, rocks, ocean, mountains and the sound of the waves.

And I completely understand why Kayla and her fiancé love spending time here.

For an engagement shoot, I especially love locations that mean something to the couple. It makes the photographs feel more personal because we're not simply creating beautiful images — we're documenting a place that is already part of their relationship.

For them, this wasn't just a beach in Cape Town.

It was their beach.

The Weather Wasn't Exactly Playing Along!

Now, I have to talk about the weather because Cape Town decided to give us a proper challenge!

The day of the shoot was very overcast and windy. We didn't have the dreamy golden sunset that you might traditionally imagine for a beach engagement session.

Instead, we had grey skies, a strong breeze and an ocean that was looking rather dramatic.

But honestly?

I think we absolutely nailed it anyway.

And this is something I always remind my clients: you don't need perfect weather to have beautiful photographs.

In fact, some of my favourite sessions happen when the conditions aren't what we initially imagined.

The overcast sky created this beautiful, soft light across the beach. The muted tones of the sand, mountains and ocean gave the photographs a romantic, almost cinematic quality. And the wind added movement to Kayla's dress and hair, making the images feel natural and alive.

Rather than fighting the weather, we embraced it.

And that's exactly what I love about lifestyle and documentary-inspired photography.

It's about working with what we're given.

Capturing the Little Details

One of my favourite images from the session is the photograph of their hands intertwined as they walk along the beach.

It might seem like a simple photograph, but these are often the images that become incredibly meaningful.

Their hands.

Their tattoos.

The sand beneath their feet.

The footprints they left behind.

The ocean stretching out behind them.

It's a tiny snapshot of who they are together.

I love incorporating details like this into an engagement gallery because your story isn't only about big romantic poses. It's also about the little things that make your relationship yours.

The way you hold hands.

The way you look at one another.

The way one person reaches for the other's arm.

The way you naturally walk together.

Those moments don't need to be manufactured.

They just need to be noticed.

Keeping the Session Natural

For Kayla and her fiancé's Cape Town engagement photography session, I wanted everything to feel relaxed and natural.

Rather than having them stand in one position and simply smile at the camera, I encouraged them to walk, talk, look at one another and interact naturally.

This gives me the opportunity to capture those genuine little moments between the posed photographs.

And because this is a location they already know and love, they didn't need to pretend to be comfortable there.

They were.

This was their happy place.

That makes such a difference.

When couples choose a meaningful location for their engagement shoot, I find that the photographs naturally become more personal because they're surrounded by something familiar.

A Beach Engagement Shoot With a Difference

There is something particularly beautiful about a Cape Town beach engagement shoot, but Misty Cliffs offered something a little different.

Instead of the classic bright-blue-sky beach photographs, we had something moodier.

The misty mountains in the distance.

The soft grey sky.

The movement of the waves.

The rugged rocks scattered across the sand.

The footprints disappearing towards the water.

And this gorgeous couple walking hand in hand through it all.

It gave the entire gallery a very romantic and intimate atmosphere.

The location almost felt like it belonged to them.

And in a way, it does.

Why I Love Photographing Couples in Places That Matter to Them

One of my favourite parts of being a Cape Town couples photographer is discovering the places that are meaningful to my clients.

Everyone has somewhere.

Maybe it's the beach where you spent your first date.

The hiking trail you visit every weekend.

The restaurant where you got engaged.

The family farm.

The park where you walk your dogs.

Or, like Kayla and her fiancé, a quiet beach where you simply love spending time together.

These locations add another layer to your photographs.

Years from now, when you look back at your engagement photos, you won't just remember what you were wearing or how you looked.

You'll remember where you were.

You'll remember the feeling of that place.

You'll remember why it mattered.

And that's what makes photographs so powerful.

Embracing Imperfect Weather for Beautiful Photographs

One thing this shoot reminded me of is that perfect photography conditions don't always mean perfect weather.

As photographers, we can become obsessed with golden hour, clear skies and beautiful sunsets.

But some of the most atmospheric photographs can come from cloudy, windy or slightly unpredictable days.

For Kayla's shoot, the wind became part of the story.

It gave movement to her dress.

It created texture in the ocean.

It made the photographs feel more dynamic.

And the soft overcast light was incredibly flattering.

Sometimes the conditions we initially think are going to ruin a shoot are actually what give the photographs their character.

So if you're planning an engagement shoot in Cape Town and the weather forecast isn't looking exactly how you hoped, don't immediately panic!

There is almost always something beautiful we can create.

Finding New Locations in Cape Town

As someone who has photographed extensively around Cape Town, I absolutely love discovering somewhere new.

Cape Town has so many incredible photography locations that it can be easy to focus on the famous ones — Camps Bay, Clifton, Signal Hill, the Bo-Kaap, Chapmans Peak and all the other beautiful locations that are well known.

But sometimes the most special places are the quieter ones.

Misty Cliffs was a wonderful reminder of that.

It's the kind of location where you can slow down, breathe, listen to the ocean and simply enjoy being together.

And now that I've discovered it, I'm definitely looking forward to returning!

Your Engagement Photos Should Feel Like You

When you're choosing a location for your engagement photography in Cape Town, my biggest piece of advice is to think beyond what looks good on Instagram.

Ask yourself:

Where do we actually love spending time together?

Where do you feel comfortable?

Where do you have memories?

Where would you love to return to years from now and say, "This is where we had our engagement photos taken."

Because while beautiful locations certainly help create beautiful photographs, meaning is what makes them special.

Kayla and her fiancé chose Misty Cliffs because it was already part of their story.

I simply got to document it.

And despite the wind, the grey skies and the less-than-perfect weather, I think we created something really beautiful.

A gallery filled with movement, connection, quiet moments, laughter and a little piece of a place that means so much to them.
