There are some sessions that feel special from the moment they begin… and then there are the ones that stay with you long after the camera is put down. This shoot with Tracy and Nero was one of those.

I’ve known Nero since he was just a few weeks old — a tiny, curious soul still figuring out the world around him. Back then, he was all soft eyes, wobbly legs, and endless curiosity. Watching him grow into the gentle, strong, and incredibly soulful horse he is today has been such a privilege. As a Cape Town photographer specializing in equine photography, these are the kinds of journeys that mean the most to me — not just showing up for a moment, but being part of a story as it unfolds over time.

Getting to photograph Nero over the years is something I’ll never take for granted. Every session feels layered with history, memories, and a deep sense of familiarity. He knows Tracy, he trusts her completely, and in many ways, I feel like I’ve been able to witness that trust deepen and evolve with every passing season.

But what makes it even more meaningful is the bond he shares with Tracy. It’s the kind of connection you don’t need to direct or pose — it just is. Quiet, trusting, and deeply rooted. You can see it in the way he leans into her, the softness in his expression when she’s near, and the way she instinctively reaches for him. There’s no performance here — just presence.

As an equine photographer, those are the moments I’m constantly searching for. Not perfection, not overly posed frames, but honesty. The little gestures. The in-between glances. The quiet pauses where everything feels still and connected. Tracy and Nero made that effortless. They simply existed together, and I had the privilege of capturing it.

And then… there was the setting.

Autumn. My absolute favourite season. 🍂

There’s just something about this time of year in Cape Town that feels like magic. The harsh summer light softens into something far more forgiving, the air carries a gentle crispness, and everything seems to slow down just enough to be appreciated. For outdoor sessions — especially equine photography — it’s truly one of the most beautiful times to shoot.

That morning light wrapped around Tracy and Nero in the most incredible way. It filtered softly through the trees, creating that dreamy, golden glow that photographers chase. It added depth, warmth, and a sense of calm to every frame. There was no rush, no harsh contrasts — just this beautiful, even light that allowed their connection to take centre stage.

And the colours… I don’t think I’ll ever not be obsessed with autumn tones. The earthy browns, the muted greens, the golden leaves scattered across the ground — it all came together like a perfectly curated palette. As a Cape Town photographer, I’m constantly inspired by how our landscapes transform with the seasons, but autumn will always have my heart. It brings a richness and moodiness that elevates every image.

What I loved most about this shoot is how everything aligned so naturally — the light, the setting, the season, and most importantly, the relationship between Tracy and Nero. Nothing felt forced. It was gentle, authentic, and deeply personal.

Sessions like this remind me why I chose equine photography in the first place. It’s not just about beautiful horses or scenic locations — it’s about connection. It’s about capturing the invisible thread between horse and rider, the trust that’s built over time, and the quiet moments that often go unnoticed.

And this story… this one feels extra special. Because it’s not just a single moment frozen in time — it’s part of a much bigger journey that I’ve been lucky enough to witness from the very beginning. 🤍
