My Pet Won't Sit Still! Can We Still Get Beautiful Photos?

One of the most common things I hear when someone is considering booking a pet photography session is:
"I'd love photos of my dog, but they won't sit still long enough!"
My answer is always the same:
That's completely normal — and honestly, it's exactly why you hire a professional pet photographer.
As a photographer who specializes in pet photography, I've spent years working with dogs of all ages, breeds, personalities, and energy levels. From excitable puppies who think every session is a game to older dogs who would rather nap in the sun, every pet is different. The secret isn't expecting them to behave like professional models — it's learning how to work with them exactly as they are.

Pet Photography Isn't About Perfectly Posed Dogs
Many people assume their dog needs extensive training before a photoshoot.
The reality is that some of the most meaningful photographs happen in between the posed moments.
I focus on capturing pets in their natural state — the curious head tilts, the alert ears, the way they look at their owners, the little expressions that make them uniquely them. During a session, I work with your pet rather than against them. We allow them time to explore, sniff, play, and settle into the environment.
Instead of expecting perfection, I create opportunities for genuine moments.
Those are often the photographs that become the favourites.
This Winter Garden Session Was the Perfect Example
Recently, I photographed these two beautiful dogs at their home in Cape Town during a cold, misty winter morning.
If someone had told me beforehand that we'd be shooting in thick winter mist, some might assume the weather would be a problem.
Instead, it became one of the most beautiful elements of the session.
Their garden provided the perfect familiar environment. There was no stress from travelling to a new location, no overwhelming distractions, and no pressure on the dogs. They could simply be themselves while we documented their personalities.
The soft mist hanging in the air created a dreamy atmosphere, while the overcast winter sky acted like a giant natural softbox. The result was rich, moody photographs filled with beautiful light and emotion.
Looking through the final gallery, you'd never know these images were created on a chilly winter morning.
In fact, the weather made them even more special.
When Is the Best Time to Schedule a Pet Photoshoot?
Another question I get asked regularly is:
"When should we book our session?"
Traditionally, early mornings and late afternoons provide the most flattering natural light for outdoor photography. The softer light creates beautiful tones, reduces harsh shadows, and is generally more comfortable for both people and pets.
However, one of the many reasons I love winter photography in Cape Town is that the rules become a little more flexible.
Those gorgeous overcast days that winter is known for create soft, even lighting throughout the day. This means we often have far more flexibility when scheduling sessions.
Cloudy skies, misty mornings, and moody weather can produce some of the most stunning photographs imaginable. The light becomes softer, colours become richer, and the entire image takes on a timeless, storytelling feel.
This particular session is proof of that.
The mist, the muted winter tones, and the familiar garden setting came together beautifully to create images full of character and warmth.

Why At-Home Pet Sessions Work So Well
Many dogs are most relaxed in their own environment.
Their garden is their territory. They know where their favourite spots are. They know the smells, sounds, and routines.
This familiarity often helps nervous pets feel more comfortable and allows their personalities to shine through naturally.
Some of my favourite pet photographs have been taken right at home, where dogs are free to interact with their owners, play, explore, and simply enjoy being themselves.
There's something incredibly special about documenting pets in the places where their everyday memories are made.

What If My Dog Doesn't Know Any Commands?
This is another concern that stops many pet owners from booking a session.
People often tell me:
"My dog can't sit for long."
"They don't know many commands."
"They're too distracted."
"They're not as well-trained as other dogs."
The truth is that your dog's training level has very little to do with whether we'll create beautiful photographs.
Of course, basic commands can sometimes help, but they are by no means a requirement. Some of the most stunning images I've captured over the years have been of dogs who preferred doing their own thing.
As a pet photographer, I have learned to adapt my approach to suit each individual animal. Some dogs love treats, some respond best to toys, and others simply need a few minutes to explore their surroundings before they are willing to engage with the camera.
The goal is never to force a pet into a situation they are uncomfortable with.
Instead, I observe their behaviour and work with their personality.
A curious dog might create beautiful images while exploring the garden. A playful dog might give us incredible action shots. A quieter dog might provide those soulful portraits that stop you in your tracks.
Every pet brings something unique to their session.
Why Authentic Moments Matter More Than Perfect Poses
When people imagine pet photography, they often picture a dog sitting perfectly still and staring directly into the camera.
While those portraits certainly have their place, they are only a small part of the story.
Years from now, what you'll often cherish most are the photographs that remind you of your pet's personality.
The way they tilt their head when they hear an interesting sound.
The way they look at you when you call their name.
The excitement in their eyes when they're playing.
The quiet moments when they sit beside you in the garden.
These are the details that tell the real story of your relationship.
During every pet session, I make a conscious effort to capture not only portraits of your pet but also the connection you share together. Whether it's a gentle pat, a game of fetch, a walk through the garden, or simply sitting together, these interactions often become some of the most treasured images in the final gallery.

Winter Is One of Cape Town's Best Kept Photography Secrets
Many people automatically think summer is the best season for photographs, but winter often produces some of the most beautiful pet photography conditions of the year.
The softer light, dramatic skies, misty mornings, and rich earthy colours create a natural mood that is difficult to replicate during brighter seasons.
The fallen leaves, cooler temperatures, and gentle overcast light help create images that feel timeless and full of atmosphere.
This particular garden session is the perfect example.
The mist added depth to the background, softened the light beautifully, and created a calm, peaceful setting that allowed these two dogs to shine. Rather than battling harsh sunlight and strong shadows, we were able to embrace the natural winter conditions and create images filled with warmth, character, and emotion.
It's proof that sometimes the weather people worry about most can actually create the most magical photographs.
Your Dog Doesn't Need To Be Perfect
If you've been putting off booking a pet photography session because you're worried your dog won't sit still, won't listen, or won't cooperate perfectly, please don't let that stop you.
Your pet doesn't need to be perfect.
They just need to be themselves.
My job is to understand animal behaviour, work around their personalities, and create photographs that celebrate exactly who they are.
Years from now, you'll treasure the images that capture their expressions, quirks, and character far more than a perfectly posed photograph.
And sometimes, as this beautiful misty winter session proved, the moments you think might be challenging end up creating the most magical photographs of all.
If you've been thinking about documenting your dog, winter in Cape Town offers some of the most beautiful conditions of the year. Whether we photograph them in your garden, at home, or at one of Cape Town's many pet-friendly locations, we'll create images that tell their story in a natural and authentic way.
