A Birthday Surprise With a Very Special Four-Legged Guest š“š¤
Some photoshoots are beautiful.
Some are meaningful.
And then there are the ones where you know, before you've even finished editing the gallery, that the photographs are going to become treasured family memories.
This was one of those shoots.
Carsten contacted me to organise something incredibly special for his wife's birthday ā a surprise photoshoot featuring their children and her beloved horse, Maverick.
Rather than buying something that would eventually be used, put away or forgotten, he chose to give her something deeply personal: photographs capturing the people ā and horse ā she loves most.
And I think the photographs speak for themselves.
More Than Just a Horse Photoshoot
When people think about equine photography, they often imagine beautifully posed portraits of a horse ā perhaps standing in a field, moving through a sunset, or showing off their best side.
And while I absolutely love creating those kinds of images, horse photography can be about so much more.
It can be about the relationship between a horse and their person.
It can be about a childhood spent around horses.
It can be about the little hands that reach up to touch a soft muzzle, the smiles when a horse turns towards them, and those fleeting moments of connection that happen completely naturally.
That was exactly what I wanted to capture during this session.
Maverick wasn't simply the horse we were photographing.
He was part of the family.
And watching these children interact with him was incredibly special.
From little hands reaching up to give him a cuddle, to curious little faces taking in this enormous four-legged friend, there were so many genuine moments happening throughout the session.
And honestly?
Maverick is clearly their very own unicorn pony.
Photographing Children With Horses: Letting the Moments Happen Naturally
One of my favourite things about photographing children is that I don't want every image to feel like they're being told exactly where to stand, where to look and what to do.
Especially when horses are involved.
Children are naturally curious. Horses are naturally unpredictable. Put the two together and you have the potential for some of the most beautiful, authentic photographs.
Rather than forcing the children into a series of rigid poses, I wanted to give them space to interact with Maverick.
Touch him. Look at him. Cuddle him. Walk beside him. Simply experience being around him.
Those moments created photographs that feel much more personal than a perfectly posed portrait ever could.
Because years from now, these children might not remember exactly how they stood for a photograph.
But they may remember how Maverick felt, how big he seemed, what it was like to stand beside him and the feeling of being with their family's beloved horse.
That's the kind of memory I want my photographs to preserve.
And Then There Was The Windā¦ šš¬ļø
Now, I have to mention the elephant ā or should I say the very strong Cape Town windĀ ā in the room.
Because WOW.
It was windy.
Really windy.
The kind of wind that can make a photographer look at the weather and think, "Okayā¦ let's work with this!"Ā š
But this is where being a lifestyle photographer really comes into play.
A photoshoot doesn't always happen under perfect conditions.
There won't always be a completely still day, perfect hair, perfectly behaved children or a horse who decides to stand exactly where you'd like him to.
And that's okay.
Instead of allowing the wind to dictate the shoot, I simply took it in my stride.
I focused on the things I couldĀ control:
The light.
The composition.
The interactions.
The children's connection with Maverick.
And most importantly, the story we were telling.
The wind actually became part of the atmosphere of the photographs. Hair moving in the breeze, beautiful backlighting filtering through the trees and those gorgeous warm tones all helped create images that feel natural and full of life.
And after seeing the final photographs, I honestly wouldn't change a thing.
The Perfect Location: Durbanville Equestrian Centre
The shoot took place at Durbanville Equestrian Centre, where Maverick is stabled, nestled in the beautiful hills of Durbanville.
Having the photoshoot somewhere that Maverick already knew was also incredibly valuable.
Rather than taking him somewhere unfamiliar purely for photographs, we were able to work within an environment where he was comfortable.
And we had some wonderful help on the day too.
Byron, the yard owner, assisted us by holding Maverick throughout the shoot and was incredibly welcoming and helpful.
His help made such a difference.
He knew Maverick and was able to help position him beautifully for the children, making sure he was standing safely and comfortably while we captured those precious interactions.
Having someone there who understood the horse meant I could concentrate on what I love doing most ā photographing the connection and telling the story.

Why Horse & Child Photography Is So Special
There is something incredibly powerful about photographs of children with horses.
Perhaps it's because horses often become such an important part of childhood.
For some children, their horse is their best friend.
Their confidant.
Their escape.
Their teacher.
Their adventure buddy.
And sometimes, their very first experience of responsibility and unconditional connection.
Those relationships deserve to be documented.
Children grow up unbelievably quickly.
The horse they once needed help to reach may eventually become the horse they ride independently.
The little hands that once stretched up to touch a muzzle become bigger.
The tiny child standing beside the horse eventually becomes a teenager.
And the photographs become a little time capsule of who they were together at that exact moment.
That's why I love photographing horses and children together.
I'm not simply creating pretty photographs.
I'm documenting a relationship.
The Beauty of Unposed Family Photography
This shoot was a wonderful reminder of why I love a more relaxed, lifestyle approach to family and equine photography.
The goal isn't always to have everyone looking at the camera.
Sometimes the most beautiful photograph is the one where nobody is looking at me at all.
It's the child reaching towards the horse.
It's the moment someone smiles because Maverick has moved closer.
It's the little interaction happening between a brother and sister.
It's the wind catching someone's hair.
It's the horse quietly standing beside them.
These are the photographs where you can feel something.
And those are often the photographs that families treasure the most.
A Birthday Gift That Will Last Much Longer Than A Present
I have a feeling this was a birthday surprise Carsten's wife is going to remember for a very, very long time.
Because he didn't just give her a photoshoot.
He gave her photographs of her children with a horse she loves.
He gave her memories of this particular stage of their lives.
He gave her something she can print, frame and hang in her home.
And years from now, when the children are older and everything about this particular moment in their lives has changed, these photographs will still exist.
That's the real value of photography.
It's not just about having beautiful images sitting inside a digital gallery.
It's about preserving the people, animals, relationships and moments that matter to you ā so you can keep coming back to them.
Your Horse Is Part of Your Family. They Deserve to Be in the Photos Too. š“
