When Your Horse Is Family: Trish, Jess, Aimee & Apple
There are some photoshoots that feel like more than simply taking photographs.
They become a little window into a family's world — the people they love, the places that are special to them, and the animals who have become such an important part of their story.
This was exactly what made photographing Trish, her daughters Jess and Aimee, and their beloved horse Apple such a special experience.
We met at Equitots Yard in Joostenbervlakte, the little yard where Apple is stabled. While it may be a small yard, it is clearly a place filled with meaning for this family. Surrounded by beautiful trees, open fields, winding paths and that gorgeous golden light, it provided the perfect setting for a relaxed family horse photoshoot.
But this session wasn't really about the location.
It was about the connection.
The laughter.
The little touches.
And, most importantly, the enormous amount of love this family has for Apple.
A Little Yard With A Very Special Horse
For people who don't ride or own horses, it can sometimes be difficult to understand just how deeply a horse can become part of a person's life.
But anyone who has experienced that relationship knows.
A horse becomes part of your routine. They become part of your happiest memories, your difficult days, your weekends, your early mornings and your everyday life.
They aren't simply an animal you visit at the stable.
They become family.
That was incredibly evident throughout this session.
Watching Trish, Jess and Aimee with Apple, you could see that he isn't simply their horse. He is someone they adore deeply. The way they touched him, stood beside him and naturally interacted with him made it clear that their relationship didn't need to be staged for the camera.
It was already there.
My job was simply to capture it.
Capturing The Connection Between Horse & Family
One of my favourite things about equestrian family photography is that the most beautiful photographs often happen in the moments you aren't deliberately creating.
A hand resting gently against a horse's face.
A daughter looking into her horse's eyes.
A quiet moment of affection.
A horse leaning towards the person he trusts.
Three family members standing together beside the horse who has become such an important part of their lives.
These are the photographs that tell the real story.
For this shoot, I wanted everything to feel natural. Rather than relying on stiff poses or asking everyone to constantly look at the camera, I encouraged Trish, Jess and Aimee to simply interact with Apple.
That meant walking together, touching him, standing beside him and allowing those little spontaneous moments to happen.
And Apple certainly had his own personality to bring to the session!
That's one of the joys of photographing horses. They don't pose on command. They don't care about getting their ears perfectly forward for every photograph. They simply respond to the people around them.
And when you allow that authenticity into a photoshoot, the resulting photographs feel so much more alive.
Photographing Apple As They See Him
Perhaps the most meaningful part of this entire session came after I delivered the final photographs.
Trish sent me a message that genuinely touched my heart:
“From all of us Ashley - THANK YOU! it hardly seems enough. Thank you for the love and care. For showing Apple as we see him no matter what - the most beautiful boy who holds our hearts.”
As a photographer, there are few compliments more meaningful than knowing that someone feels you have captured their loved one exactly as they see them.
And that is always what I hope to achieve.
Not simply technically beautiful photographs.
Not photographs that look perfectly posed.
But photographs that capture how it feels to love someone.
In this case, that someone happens to have four legs.
Apple is clearly their beautiful boy. Their family member. Their much-loved horse.
And reading Trish's message after the shoot reminded me exactly why I love photographing these kinds of relationships.
Because sometimes a photograph can say something that words simply can't.
Why Horse Photography Is About More Than The Horse
When I photograph horses and their owners, I don't want to create a collection of photographs that simply shows what the horse looks like.
I want to document the relationship between horse and human.
The connection.
The trust.
The affection.
The little details that make that relationship unique.
Perhaps it is the way your horse rests his head against you. Maybe it's the way he follows you around the paddock, the expression he makes when he knows treats are coming, or the quiet moment when you stand together after a ride.
Those moments may feel completely ordinary when you're living them.
But they are exactly the moments you'll miss one day.
This is why I believe horse and owner photography is so important.
Horses grow older. Families change. Children grow up. Life moves forward.
The yard where your horse is stabled today might not always be the same. The routines you have now may eventually become memories.
Photographs give you the ability to hold onto those moments.
A Family Photoshoot With A Difference
What I loved most about photographing Trish, Jess, Aimee and Apple was that this was a family photoshoot in every sense of the word.
It wasn't just about taking individual portraits.
It was about photographing them together.
Their relationship as mother and daughters.
Their relationship with Apple.
And the unique place he holds within their family.
There were moments of quiet affection, beautiful portraits, laughter and plenty of opportunities for Apple to steal the spotlight.
And honestly, I wouldn't have had it any other way.
Because when a horse is this loved, they deserve to be at the centre of the story.
Golden Light, Open Paths & Beautiful Memories
Equitots Yard in Joostenbervlakte turned out to be the perfect backdrop for this session.
The beautiful trees and open spaces created a relaxed, natural environment, while the soft golden light added warmth to the photographs.
I love locations like this for equestrian photography in Cape Town because they allow the photographs to feel timeless.
There doesn't need to be an elaborate backdrop.
Sometimes a dirt path, old trees, long grass and beautiful evening light are all you need.
The focus remains where it belongs — on the people and the horse.
And in these photographs, that connection is impossible to miss.
The Photographs We Keep Forever
I think the photographs I love most are rarely the ones that are technically perfect.
They're the ones that tell a story.
The ones where you can almost hear the laughter.
The ones where you remember exactly what your horse felt like beneath your hand.
The ones that transport you back to a particular afternoon, a particular place and a particular chapter of your life.
Years from now, Trish, Jess and Aimee will be able to look back at these photographs and remember Apple exactly as he was during this chapter of their lives.
And hopefully, they will remember this little yard in Joostenbervlakte, the beautiful light, the laughter and the feeling of being together.
That is the real value of photography.
Not just remembering what something looked like, but remembering how it felt.
Four Hearts, One Very Special Horse

This shoot reminded me once again why I love family and equestrian photography so much.
Because sometimes the most beautiful family photographs aren't taken inside a studio or at a traditional family photoshoot location.
Sometimes they're taken at the stable yard, with dusty paths beneath your feet, trees overhead and your horse standing right beside you.
Sometimes the most important member of the family has four hooves.
And sometimes, all a photographer needs to do is step back and allow that love to unfold naturally in front of the camera.
For Trish, Jess and Aimee, Apple isn't simply their horse.
He is their beautiful boy who holds their hearts.
And I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to capture a little piece of that love for them.
