A Dreamy Matric Dance Photoshoot at Vergelegen Wine Estate | Andrea’s Princess-Inspired Portraits
There are some matric dance photoshoots where everything just seems to fall into place — the dress, the location, the light, and those little in-between moments that make the photographs feel truly magical. Andrea’s matric dance photoshoot at Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West was exactly that.
Dressed in an incredible flowing gown covered in delicate sparkle and intricate detailing, Andrea looked every bit like a princess. 🤍 From the elegant gardens and historic surroundings to the dramatic movement of her gown, this session was such a beautiful way to celebrate one of those unforgettable milestones of her school years.
And while the photographs may look effortless, there was one thing we had to work around: midday sunlight.
Making Midday Light Work for a Matric Dance Photoshoot
Photographers will often talk about the golden hour being the ideal time for portraits — and while I absolutely love beautiful soft evening light, matric dance photoshoots don't always happen at the perfect time of day.
Sometimes the schedule means we are shooting right in the middle of the day, when the sun is high, the shadows are strong and the light can be incredibly harsh.
That was exactly what we were working with for Andrea's session.
But this is where knowing your location makes such a difference.
Instead of allowing the harsh sunlight to dictate the entire shoot, we explored Vergelegen Wine Estate and looked for those tucked-away areas where the architecture, trees, pathways and gardens created beautiful pockets of softer, more flattering light.
And honestly? I think the photographs speak for themselves.
We found shaded areas beneath the trees, beautiful garden pathways and pockets of light filtering through the foliage that gave the photographs depth and warmth. Rather than seeing the midday sun as a problem, we simply worked with what the location gave us.
Vergelegen Wine Estate Was the Perfect Backdrop
Vergelegen is such a beautiful location for a Cape Town matric dance photoshoot.
The historic estate has an incredible combination of manicured gardens, enormous established trees, architectural details and beautiful pathways. There are so many different areas to explore that a shoot can feel varied without ever having to leave the estate.
For Andrea's session, the gardens provided a wonderful contrast to her gown.
The softness of the flowing fabric against the deep greens of the trees created a beautiful, almost fairytale-like feeling. Her dress had so much movement and texture that I wanted to give it room to become part of the photographs rather than simply photographing her standing still.
And that meant getting creative.
Capturing the Movement of the Gown
One of my favourite things about photographing matric dances is that I don't want the session to consist entirely of posed portraits.
Yes, we absolutely need those beautiful, classic photographs where you can see the dress, hair, makeup and all the little details that went into creating the look.
But then I also want to capture movement, personality and emotion.
Andrea's gown was made for movement.
The flowing fabric created these beautiful dramatic shapes whenever she walked, turned or lifted the skirt, and we were able to create some really striking portraits with the fabric flowing around her.
Those are the images that make a matric dance gallery feel like more than a collection of photographs. They help tell the story of how she looked and, more importantly, how she felt.
More Than Just a Photograph of the Dress
There is so much preparation that goes into a matric dance.
The dress has been chosen. Hair and makeup have been planned. Shoes, jewellery and accessories have all been carefully considered. There is excitement, nerves and usually a whole lot of anticipation surrounding the evening.
So when I photograph a matric dance, I want to preserve more than just what the student wore.
I want to capture the feeling of the occasion.
Andrea genuinely looked like a princess in her gown, and being able to photograph her in such a beautiful setting made the entire session feel incredibly special.
From the more editorial-style portraits to the photographs showing the full gown, the close-up details and the playful movement, every part of the session added something different to her gallery.
Including the Special People Behind the Day
A matric dance is also a milestone for the people who have helped get you there. It’s not just a big moment for the person stepping into their dress or suit — it’s a moment that parents and family get to celebrate too.
For Andrea’s matric dance photoshoot, her dad, mum and two younger brothers were there to share in the excitement, and I absolutely loved having them included in the session. 🤍
One of my favourite photographs from the day is actually a completely unplanned moment — Andrea walking ahead in her beautiful gown while her dad follows behind, carrying the enormous train of her dress as they moved from one location to the next. 😂🤍
Her dress had so much beautiful flowing fabric that her dad quickly became the official dress carrier for the afternoon! And honestly, I think that makes the photograph even more special. It captures a little behind-the-scenes glimpse of what the day was really like — the people helping, laughing, walking and making sure everything was just right for her.
I also loved capturing Andrea with her mum and younger brothers. These family photographs are such an important part of a matric dance gallery because they document the people who were there to celebrate this milestone with her.
There was something particularly lovely about seeing her surrounded by her family, all dressed up and so proud of her. These aren't just photographs of a matric dance — they're photographs of a family celebrating one of their own. 🤍
Because one day, the dress will be packed away, the shoes will go back in their box and the matric dance will become a beautiful memory. But these photographs will always bring back the people who were there, the excitement of the day, and those little moments in between — including Dad making sure that princess dress made it safely to every single spot! 👑✨
Why I Love Matric Dance Photography
There is something incredibly rewarding about photographing these milestone sessions.
Every student arrives with their own personality, their own style and their own vision for how they want to remember this chapter of their life.
Some want something classic and elegant. Others want something dramatic and editorial. Some want to embrace the location and create something completely different.
For me, the goal is always to create photographs that feel beautiful, natural and timeless, while still allowing the personality of the person in front of my camera to shine through.
Andrea's session was the perfect example of that.
An incredible gown, beautiful gardens, dramatic flowing fabric, golden warmth filtering through the trees — and a whole lot of exploring to find those perfect pockets of light.
And perhaps my biggest takeaway from this session?
You don't need perfect lighting conditions to create beautiful photographs. You need to know how to work with the light you have. ✨
