Discover a magical equine photoshoot in Hout Bay, Cape Town, where golden afternoon light, a hidden woodland path, a beautiful horse and beloved dogs came together to create the most heartwarming memories.

Some places just feel like home. 🤎

They might not be the grandest locations or the most famous spots on the map, but they hold a special kind of magic. They are the places where we escape the noise of everyday life, spend time with the souls we love most and create the little memories that end up meaning everything.

For Bron, her beautiful horse Noodle and her pups, this little woodland spot in Hout Bay is exactly that.

Tucked away beneath a canopy of trees, with a winding path, soft golden light and the most peaceful atmosphere, it was the perfect setting for an equine photography session that felt less like a photoshoot and more like a glimpse into their everyday lives.

And honestly? These are the sessions I love most.

As a Cape Town equine photographer, I get to meet incredible horses and their people while discovering beautiful corners of the city that I might never have known existed. This session was a wonderful reminder of why I love what I do — not only because I get to photograph the special bond between people and their animals, but because Cape Town always seems to have another hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

A Special Bond Between Bron, Noodle and Her Pups

When Bron booked her session, the idea was to capture the connection she shares with her animals in a place that means something to her.

There is something incredibly special about photographing horses and their owners in an environment where they feel comfortable. You don't always need elaborate styling, dramatic mountain views or a perfectly manicured field. Sometimes, all you need is your favourite horse, your dogs, a beautiful setting and the freedom to simply enjoy being together.

Noodle was the star of this session, of course, but her little canine companions made sure they weren't forgotten!

Having the dogs along added such a lovely, relaxed element to the photographs. They could wander along the path, explore their surroundings and be part of the experience rather than simply waiting on the sidelines.

I love including dogs in equine photography sessions because horses and dogs often form such an important part of the same family. They might have very different personalities and occupy different roles in our lives, but the love we have for them is just as meaningful.

For Bron, having Noodle and her pups together in one of her favourite places made this session especially personal.

We captured a mixture of portraits and more candid moments, allowing the photographs to tell the story of their little family. From those beautiful portraits beside Noodle to the wider shots of them wandering together through the woodland, every image reflected a different part of the experience.

And that is what I want my photography to do: preserve not just what a moment looked like, but a little of what it felt like to be there.

The Most Magical Golden Light in Hout Bay

If there is one thing that made this location feel particularly special, it was the light.

Anyone who photographs outdoors knows that light can completely transform an environment. A simple path can become atmospheric, an ordinary patch of grass can glow, and a familiar setting can suddenly look like something from a storybook.

This little woodland area had all the ingredients for that kind of magic.

The trees created a natural canopy overhead, allowing the afternoon sunshine to filter through the leaves in delicate patches. Instead of harsh sunlight falling directly onto everyone, the surrounding foliage softened the light and created beautiful areas of shade.

And then there were those golden beams!

As the sunlight slipped through the branches, it illuminated the grass and picked up the edges of Noodle's dark coat, creating the most beautiful separation between her and the background. The warm tones of the trees, the soft greens of the woodland and Bron's simple white dress complemented one another perfectly.

The result was a collection of photographs that felt warm, peaceful and almost dreamlike.

One of my favourite things about working with natural light is that it never stays quite the same. A little movement in the clouds, the sun shifting behind a tree or the light changing as the afternoon progresses can completely alter the mood of an image.

That is part of the fun of outdoor photography. You have to observe your surroundings, work with what nature gives you and sometimes trust your instincts when you spot a beautiful patch of light.

For this session, the woodland did so much of the storytelling for us. The dappled sunlight created depth, the trees framed Bron and Noodle naturally, and the winding path gave the photographs a sense of movement and adventure.

It was the perfect reminder that you don't always need a wide-open landscape to create beautiful equine portraits. Sometimes, a little patch of woodland in Hout Bay is all the magic you need.

Discovering Hidden Gem Photoshoot Locations in Cape Town

One of the things I genuinely love about being a photographer in Cape Town is discovering new locations.

You might think that after spending so much time photographing around the city and its surrounding areas, you would eventually run out of places to explore. But somehow, Cape Town always surprises me!

There is always another quiet path, tucked-away garden, peaceful woodland or unexpected little corner that I didn't even know existed.

And I absolutely love that about this city.

We are so fortunate to have such a diverse landscape on our doorstep. Within a relatively short distance, you can find dramatic mountain scenery, beautiful beaches, open fields, vineyards, forests and quiet suburban green spaces that feel worlds away from the busy city.

Some of these places are well known, while others are the sort of hidden gems you might stumble across while exploring somewhere new.

This Hout Bay location was exactly the kind of discovery that makes me excited about planning photoshoots. It had character, beautiful natural textures and, most importantly, a sense of tranquillity that suited Bron and her animals perfectly.

As a photographer, I am always looking at places a little differently. I notice how the light falls through the trees, how the background might frame a horse, whether there is enough space to work safely and how a location might feel in photographs at different times of the day.

A place doesn't have to be famous to be beautiful, and it certainly doesn't need to be a traditional photoshoot location to create something extraordinary.

Sometimes, the best locations are the ones you discover unexpectedly.

I love finding these little spots around Cape Town because they allow me to offer clients something personal and unique. Rather than every gallery looking the same, we can choose a setting that reflects the personality of the horse, the owner and the kind of memories they want to create.

And the fact that I still find places I have never seen before makes every new discovery feel like a little adventure of its own.

Why Your Horse's Favourite Places Make the Best Photoshoot Locations

When planning an equine photography session, one of the first things I encourage owners to consider is their horse's environment.

Of course, beautiful scenery is wonderful, but the setting should also work for the horse and the experience you want to create.

Your horse's familiar surroundings can be a fantastic starting point. A favourite field, a quiet woodland path, a peaceful stretch of farm road or a beautiful paddock can all provide wonderful opportunities for photographs.

These places often hold memories of their own. Perhaps it is the route you walk together every afternoon, the field where your horse loves to graze or the quiet corner where you go to escape a busy day at the yard.

Choosing a meaningful location adds another layer to your photographs.

For horses who are happiest in familiar surroundings, it can also make the experience more relaxed. Every horse is different, so choosing a suitable environment and allowing enough time for them to settle is always important.

For this session, the peaceful atmosphere of the woodland worked beautifully. There was space to walk together, opportunities for relaxed portraits and lovely natural backdrops without needing to travel between multiple locations.

The result was a gallery that felt authentic to Bron and her animals.

And if you have dogs as well as horses, including them in your session can make the experience even more special. With thoughtful planning and appropriate supervision, we can create photographs that celebrate your entire four-legged family.

After all, these animals are such a big part of our lives. Why wouldn't we want to include them in the memories we preserve?

More Than Beautiful Photographs: Capturing the Little Moments

While I always want to create beautiful portraits for my clients, some of my favourite photographs are the ones that happen in between the planned shots.

A horse quietly standing beside their person. A dog trotting happily down a path. The way the afternoon sunlight catches a familiar face. Those small interactions that might seem ordinary at the time but become precious when you look back on them years later.

With Bron, Noodle and the pups, I wanted the gallery to feel like a little story.

Some photographs focused on the connection between Bron and Noodle, celebrating the beauty and presence of her horse. Others included the dogs, capturing the joy of having everyone together. The wider woodland scenes helped tell the story of the place itself — the winding path, the trees, the soft grass and the golden afternoon light.

I also love creating variety in a gallery. A close-up portrait can be wonderfully intimate, while a wider photograph gives you a sense of the landscape and the atmosphere surrounding the moment.

Together, these different images create something more meaningful than a collection of individual portraits. They document a little piece of life with the animals who make it special.

Our horses and dogs are woven into our everyday routines. They are part of our happiest moments, our quiet escapes and sometimes the very reason we make time to slow down.

Photographs allow us to hold onto those memories.

And although we cannot stop time, we can preserve little reminders of the seasons of life we never want to forget.

Planning an Equine Photoshoot in Cape Town?

If you have been thinking about booking an equine photography session, I would love to help you create something just as personal.

Whether you dream of golden-hour portraits in a woodland setting, beautiful photographs in your horse's favourite paddock or a session that includes your dogs, we can plan an experience that suits you and your animals.

As a Cape Town equine photographer, my approach is relaxed and storytelling-focused. I want you to enjoy the experience rather than feel as though you need to perform for the camera.

You don't need to know how to pose, and your horse certainly doesn't need to stand perfectly still for every photograph. Some of the most beautiful moments happen naturally when we allow animals to express their personalities and give them time to settle.

We can explore location ideas together, taking into account the light, the environment, your horse's temperament and the kind of photographs you would love to have.

And if you have a special place that means the world to you and your horse, I am always excited to hear about it!

It might be somewhere well known around Cape Town, or it might be a little hidden gem like Bron's woodland escape in Hout Bay.

Either way, I would love to help you turn those meaningful moments into photographs you can treasure.

Because sometimes, the most beautiful photographs aren't taken in the most extraordinary places. They're taken in the places that mean the most to us, with the animals who feel like home. 🤎
