There’s something incredibly special about photographing rescue dogs. They seem to carry their stories in their eyes, their expressions layered with the wisdom of second chances and the warmth of deep connection. Recently, I had the honour of photographing Tessa and her two beloved girls, Abby and Mia — both gorgeous rescue dogs — in a magical outdoor session filled with love, light, and gentle moments.
Tessa’s bond with Abby and Mia is unmistakable. From the moment we met at the serene lakeside location, it was clear how deeply these three souls are connected. Their energy was calm, trusting, and beautiful to witness — the kind of energy that makes for the most emotive and authentic images.

Abby — A Striking Beauty with a Spotted Coat
Abby immediately caught my eye with her stunning brown-spotted coat. Her markings are so unique — a dappled blend of white and warm brown tones that seem to shimmer in the golden hour sun. Her bright eyes were full of curiosity and intelligence, always scanning her surroundings with a calm confidence.
She posed like a pro, showing off her unique coat in the soft, dappled light beneath the trees. Abby exudes quiet strength and grace — the kind of dog that draws you in with just a look. She was incredibly cooperative, responding gently to cues and never straying far from Tessa’s side. Her devotion to her human was so evident in every frame, and it was a joy to document their bond.

Mia — Gentle, Patient, and Full of Soul
Then there’s sweet Mia, who completely melted my heart. With her gentle demeanour and soulful eyes, Mia was a dream to photograph. She was so patient and calm during our entire shoot, allowing us to capture a variety of natural and posed moments without ever showing a hint of stress. It's often said that older dogs carry a quiet wisdom with them, and Mia embodied that completely.
Whether she was sitting beside Tessa or standing tall with Abby, Mia's elegance and loyalty radiated through the camera. Her presence brought a calm to the shoot — a grounding energy that balanced perfectly with Abby’s alertness. It's in these small, quiet moments that true pet photography magic happens.

Why Working with a Professional Pet Photographer Matters
Sessions like this are a big part of why I do what I do. As a Cape Town pet photographer with over 10 years of experience working with animals, I understand how to read body language, respect boundaries, and make both dogs and humans feel at ease. It’s not just about snapping pictures — it’s about capturing personalities, relationships, and that unique spark that makes your pet truly yours.
Rescue dogs, in particular, often need a gentle and patient approach. Having worked with countless dogs of all temperaments and backgrounds, I bring not just my camera to the shoot — I bring a deep respect and understanding of animal behaviour. This experience shows in every photo. It’s what allows me to capture the soulful connection between pets and their people, even when the subjects are shy, senior, or easily distracted.
Golden hour is a favourite time for me to shoot, and on this particular day, it gave us the most dreamy backdrop. The light filtered beautifully through the trees, creating a natural glow that brought out the best in Abby’s rich coat and the soft tones in Mia’s fur. Every image felt golden, both in colour and sentiment.
A Celebration of Love and Loyalty
This shoot wasn’t just about capturing pretty pictures — it was a celebration of two incredible dogs who’ve found their forever home with someone who truly treasures them. Rescue dogs are survivors, lovers, and fiercely loyal companions. Abby and Mia are shining examples of what happens when animals are given love, patience, and a second chance.
Tessa, thank you for trusting me to capture your girls. Your love for them shines so brightly, and I’m grateful to have been part of this chapter in your story together.
