A Golden At-Home Family Photoshoot in Newlands, Cape Town

There is something incredibly special about photographing a family in the place where they are most themselves. No unfamiliar surroundings, no pressure to stand in a particular pose and no need to create moments that aren't naturally there. Just a family, their home, their animals and all the little pieces of everyday life that make their story uniquely theirs.
That was exactly the approach for this beautiful at-home family photoshoot in Newlands, Cape Town.
This wonderful family wanted their photographs to feel natural, warm and full of life. Most importantly, they wanted their animals included. With three dogs and two beautiful birds as part of the family, there was never any question that they should be left out of the photographs!
And honestly, I couldn't have loved it more.
A Natural Family Photoshoot at Home
When I photograph families, one of my favourite things is stepping away from the idea that every photograph needs to be perfectly posed.
The best photographs often happen in between the poses.
A child laughing at something their parent said. A dog jumping onto the couch. A little hand reaching out to stroke a beloved pet. A mother cuddling her child. A family simply enjoying being together.
These are the moments that tell a story.
For this Newlands family photography session, we started inside the family's beautiful home, allowing everyone to relax and settle into the shoot naturally. Rather than immediately gathering everyone together and asking them to look at the camera, we allowed the children and animals to move around and interact with one another.
The result was a collection of photographs that felt genuine, playful and completely them.
Golden Light in the Lounge
One of the first things that caught my eye when I arrived was the beautiful light pouring through the windows in the lounge.
The late afternoon sunshine created the most gorgeous warm, golden light, filling the room and giving everything that soft, magical glow that I love so much in my photography.
Natural light can completely transform an indoor family photoshoot, and this room was absolutely perfect.
The light wrapped around the family as they cuddled, laughed and interacted with their dogs. Rather than needing complicated lighting setups, we simply worked with what the house was already giving us.
And sometimes, that's where the magic happens.
As a Cape Town lifestyle photographer, I love using the natural environment around a family rather than trying to make their home look like a studio. Your home already contains so much of your family's story — the furniture, the favourite rooms, the fireplace, the garden and all the little details that you might not think twice about.
Years from now, those details can become incredibly meaningful.
When the Dogs Become Part of the Family Portrait
If you have animals, you already know they aren't "just pets".
They're family. ❤️
And during this session, the three dogs played an even bigger role than simply being part of the photographs — they were actually the secret to getting the whole family comfortable in front of the camera!
When I first arrived, the children weren't particularly keen on the idea of having their photographs taken. And honestly, I completely understand. Being asked to pose for a photographer can feel strange for children, especially when they're not sure what to expect.
So rather than forcing anything, we let them take their time.
And then we brought the dogs into the room.
Almost immediately, everything changed.
The children warmed up, their personalities started coming through and suddenly the camera wasn't the most interesting thing in the room anymore. They were busy cuddling, playing with and interacting with their dogs — exactly as they would on any normal day.
And that's when the magic happened.
Instead of asking the children to smile at the camera, I could photograph them laughing with their dogs, wrapping their arms around them, playing with them and simply enjoying being together.
The dogs gave the children something familiar to focus on and helped them forget that they were even having their photographs taken.
This is one of the biggest reasons I absolutely love including pets in family photography sessions in Cape Town.
Animals have this incredible ability to break down barriers. They can make a nervous child laugh, give a shy child something to hold onto and turn what could feel like a formal photoshoot into something that feels much more like play.
And for me, those are the photographs I want to create.
Not forced smiles.
Not perfectly posed children.
But real connection.
The little hands reaching for a favourite dog. The giggles when a dog gets a little too close. The cuddles. The chaos. The moments when nobody is looking at the camera because they're too busy enjoying each other.
Those photographs tell a much bigger story.
They capture the relationship between a child and the animal they may have grown up alongside — a relationship that can be incredibly special and, sadly, something that changes as children and pets grow older.
So if your children aren't particularly excited about having their photographs taken, don't worry!
Bring the dog. 🐶❤️
Let them play. Let them cuddle. Let them be themselves.

This is exactly why I love family and pet photography in Cape Town. Your animals aren't an inconvenience or something to leave out of the family portrait. They can actually be the key to creating the most natural, joyful photographs of your children — because when they're with the animals they love, they forget all about the camera and simply become themselves.
Two Very Special Feathered Family Members
And then there were the birds!
The family also has two beautiful birds who joined us during the shoot, creating some of the most unique and memorable photographs of the session.
One of my favourite moments was photographing their little girl interacting with them. There was something so innocent and beautiful about watching her curiosity and connection with these animals.
These are the kinds of photographs that you simply can't manufacture.
They happen because we allow children to be themselves and give them the freedom to interact naturally with the people and animals they love.
One of My Favourite Settings: The Fireplace
The fireplace quickly became one of my favourite locations within the house.
The combination of the beautiful architecture, the darker tones and that incredible stream of golden sunlight created such a cinematic atmosphere.
There was something almost magical about watching the light fall across the room and illuminate the little moments happening within it.
One of the photographs from this part of the shoot captures their daughter sitting near the fireplace with one of the birds. It's the kind of image that feels like a tiny piece of childhood captured in time.
And that is exactly what I want family photography to do.
Not just show what everyone looked like, but remind you how it felt.
Taking the Photoshoot Outside
Once we'd finished exploring the beautiful light indoors, we headed outside into the garden.
This gave the children the opportunity to simply play.
And this is where lifestyle photography really comes into its own.
Instead of asking the children to stand still and smile, we let them explore, play and be themselves. There was a balance between gentle direction from me and giving them the freedom to do whatever came naturally.
There were bikes, games, animals, cuddles and plenty of movement.
And some of my favourite photographs came from these completely unplanned moments.
One image in particular captures their daughter outside with one of the dogs, completely absorbed in the moment. Another shows her riding her little bike through the garden, looking exactly like a happy, carefree child.
Those are the photographs parents treasure.

It's where your children play. Where they have breakfast. Where they cuddle with the dogs. Where birthdays are celebrated. Where stories are read. Where little personalities develop.

The sofa they always climbed onto.
The fireplace they sat beside.

A Family Photoshoot That Feels Like You
This Newlands family session was everything I love about lifestyle photography.
It was warm.
It was playful.
It was full of animals.
It was filled with beautiful natural light.
And most importantly, it felt completely authentic to this family.
From the golden light in the lounge to the quiet moments beside the fireplace, the cuddles with the dogs, the interaction with the birds and the children running and playing outside, every part of the session helped tell their story.
And that's always my goal as a Cape Town family photographer.
I don't want you to look back at your photographs and simply remember the day you had a photoshoot.
I want you to look at them years from now and remember your family exactly as they were.
The laughter.
The cuddles.
The chaos.
The pets.
The little personalities.
The beautiful home you shared.
And all those fleeting moments that were gone almost as quickly as they arrived.
