There is something very special about being trusted with a secret.

Not just any secret, but the kind that involves a carefully planned question, a nervous fiancé-to-be, a beautiful ring hidden away, and a plan that has been in the works for weeks. 💍

Vian and I had been in contact for quite some time before this shoot. There were messages, planning, coordinating, discussing the details and, of course, making sure I was exactly where I needed to be to capture the moment without giving the biggest surprise away.

And then there was the location…

Jordan Wine Estate. Just WOW.

Set among the beautiful Stellenbosch Winelands, Jordan Wine Estate is one of those places that makes you stop and take in the view. Rolling vineyards, mountains stretching into the distance and the kind of scenery that honestly looks like it was designed specifically for a romantic proposal.

The estate’s private picnic pods and picnic experiences offer beautiful views and a relaxed, romantic setting, making it an absolutely gorgeous option for couples planning something special. If you are looking for a proposal location in the Stellenbosch Winelands, I highly recommend having a look at their picnic options.

The perfect proposal setup

For Vian’s proposal, the most beautiful picnic spot was set up at a viewpoint overlooking the farm.

Soft blankets. Cushions. Flowers. A little wooden crate with a sweet “Mrs” detail. Rose petals scattered across the grass. And, of course, a view that stretched for days.

It was romantic, intimate and beautifully simple.

The kind of setting where you can almost feel that something is about to happen.

And then, at 11:30 in the morning, we had one very important detail to contend with…

The sun. 😅

11:30am light? Challenge accepted.

As a photographer, I am the first person to tell my clients that the softest, dreamiest light usually happens in the early morning or late afternoon. Midday sunlight is often harsh, direct and a little less forgiving.

But sometimes the timing is part of the surprise.

Sometimes you don't get to move a proposal because the sun is feeling particularly aggressive. 😂

This proposal was planned for 11:30am, which meant I needed to work with the light rather than fight against it. And honestly?

Look at these photos. I think I absolutely killed it. 😉

This is exactly why you hire a professional photographer. Hehe.

Photography is not only about knowing how to photograph in perfect conditions. It's about understanding light, finding the best angles, positioning your subjects and knowing how to create beautiful images when Mother Nature decides to turn the Stellenbosch Winelands into a giant natural spotlight.

And somehow, with the incredible view, the emotion of the moment and two people completely wrapped up in each other, the harsh light became the least important thing about the photographs.

And then came the moment

There is always a beautiful build-up before a proposal.

The anticipation.

The nerves.

The carefully rehearsed plan.

And then suddenly, it happens.

The question is asked.

The ring comes out.

And the answer is YES. 🥹💍

From that moment on, everything changes. The nerves disappear and the joy takes over. There were hugs, kisses, laughter, happy tears and those quiet little moments where the two of them simply looked at each other and let it all sink in.

Because this was no longer just a beautiful picnic at a wine estate.

This was the beginning of the next chapter of their lives together.

Capturing the “after the yes”

While the proposal itself is always incredibly special, I absolutely love photographing the moments that happen immediately afterwards too.

The excitement.

The way they cannot stop smiling.

The slightly disbelieving “Oh my goodness, we're engaged!” feeling.

The ring photos, obviously. ✨

And all those beautiful, natural moments between the two of them as the excitement settles and reality begins to sink in.

These photographs aren't just about documenting a proposal. They tell the story of the whole experience — from the beautiful setting and the nervous anticipation to the biggest hugs and happiest smiles after the yes.

A proposal to remember in the Stellenbosch Winelands

Vian, thank you for trusting me with such a special secret and allowing me to be part of such an important day. It was an absolute privilege to help bring the plan together and capture the moment she said yes.

And to Jordan Wine Estate… I mean, seriously. What an incredible backdrop for a proposal. If you are planning something romantic and looking for a breathtaking Stellenbosch proposal location, definitely take a look at what they offer.

The views are insane. The picnic experience is beautiful. And I can personally confirm that it makes for one hell of a proposal backdrop. 😉✨

Thinking of planning a surprise proposal in Cape Town, Stellenbosch or the Cape Winelands? I would love to help you plan the photography side of the surprise and capture every single second — from the nervous arrival to the moment you pop the question and everything that follows. 💍🤍

Because some moments happen in seconds… but the photographs let you relive them forever. 📸
