Jess and her gorgeous Belgian Malinois puppy, Nova, met me at Equitots Farm in Joostenbergvlakte, Cape Town, for an evening pet photography session that reminded me exactly why I love winter photography so much. With the fresh green oat hay fields stretching into the distance, golden sunlight pouring over the landscape, and one incredibly photogenic puppy discovering the world one adventure at a time, it was one of those afternoons where everything simply came together.

Why Winter is Secretly Cape Town's Best Photography Season

Every year I hear people say they'll wait until summer to organise family photos, couple sessions, or photos with their dogs.

But winter deserves far more credit than it gets.

Our winters are incredibly unique. Instead of endless grey skies, we're often treated to spectacular sunny afternoons between the rain. Those cooler temperatures mean everyone—especially our four-legged family members—is far more comfortable outdoors.

Dogs aren't panting from the heat.

You aren't squinting into harsh midday sunlight.

The light is softer, warmer and wraps around everything beautifully.

As photographers, we spend our lives chasing beautiful light, and winter gives us some of the very best.

Jess and Nova's session was the perfect example of that.

As golden hour approached, the sun settled lower in the sky, casting a rich golden glow across the fields. Every blade of grass seemed to shimmer, while the fresh green oat hay created an almost painterly backdrop that perfectly complemented Nova's rich black and tan coat and Jess's soft neutral outfit.

The entire scene felt calm, warm and timeless.

Equitots Farm – One of Cape Town's Hidden Gems

Tucked away in Joostenbergvlakte, Equitots Farm has become one of my favourite locations during winter.

It's peaceful.

It's spacious.

And during this time of year, it's unbelievably beautiful.

The fresh oat hay fields provide layers of vibrant green textures, while the surrounding wildflowers add delicate splashes of white and yellow throughout the landscape.

One of my favourite moments from the session was watching Jess kneel amongst the flowers, gently holding Nova as the evening sunlight illuminated them both. The golden light wrapped around Jess's white knit jersey, creating beautiful contrast against Nova's darker colouring.

It almost looked like a painting.

Every direction we turned offered another stunning backdrop.

Rustic wooden fences.

Country pathways winding through the fields.

Wildflowers dancing in the breeze.

Towering trees framing the horizon.

It's one of those rare locations where you hardly need to move more than a few metres before discovering another beautiful composition.

Meet Nova – A Puppy Full of Curiosity

Anyone who has ever met a Belgian Malinois knows they have an incredible zest for life.

Nova was no exception.

Everything was exciting.

Every sound.

Every flower.

Every bird flying overhead.

Every breeze moving through the grass.

Photographing puppies is wonderfully unpredictable, and that's exactly what makes sessions like these so rewarding.

Rather than expecting them to sit perfectly still, I embrace their curiosity.

Some of my favourite photographs happen between the "posed" moments.

Nova would happily look towards the camera for a few seconds before something else completely stole her attention, and those tiny expressions of curiosity made the images feel even more genuine.

One particular portrait captures Nova sitting comfortably in Jess's arms, ears standing proudly upright while looking off into the distance. Jess isn't looking at the camera—she's looking at Nova with the kind of smile only dog owners truly understand.

It's subtle. Natural. Completely unforced.

Those are the moments that become treasured memories.

The Little Details Tell the Story

One thing I always encourage clients to think about isn't just the portraits themselves—but the story we're preserving.

When Jess arrived, she'd dressed beautifully for the setting without trying too hard.

A cosy cream cable-knit jersey.

Classic blue jeans.

Soft natural makeup.

Nothing distracted from the connection between her and Nova.

Nova wore the sweetest floral bandana, adding just enough personality without taking attention away from those expressive little ears and curious eyes.

As they wandered along the country path together, the colours worked perfectly against the surrounding landscape. Warm golden sunlight. Deep green grass. Bright yellow winter flowers.

Soft earthy tones.

Everything felt beautifully balanced.

Those thoughtful details are often what elevate a gallery from simply looking pretty to feeling timeless years later.

Why I Love Photographing the Bond Between People and Their Dogs

As a pet photographer in Cape Town, I don't simply photograph dogs.

I photograph relationships.

The way your dog looks up at you.

Unlike summer, where golden hour disappears quickly, winter often gives us a longer window of beautiful light to work with.

During Jess and Nova's session, we watched the light gradually become richer as the sun lowered behind the trees.

The wildflowers began glowing.

The grass almost looked illuminated.

Even the rustic farm fencing caught the warm evening light, adding beautiful depth and texture to the images.

Every photograph felt warm despite being taken in winter.

That's exactly why I encourage so many of my clients not to wait until summer.
