There’s just something so special about this time of year. The excitement, the anticipation, the dresses carefully chosen months in advance, the nervous energy before photos, and the way matric dances somehow manage to feel like a scene straight out of a movie. And honestly? I couldn’t have asked for a more magical way to kick off this year’s matric dance season.

My very first matric dance shoot of the season started off with an absolute bang at the beautiful Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Mowbray, and it reminded me exactly why I love photographing these moments so much.
From the second Kate stepped out in her dress, I knew this session was going to be unforgettable. She looked absolutely incredible — elegant, glowing, and completely owning every moment in front of the camera. Her dress caught the light in the most beautiful way, adding that perfect touch of sparkle against the warm Cape Town afternoon light. Everything about the session felt effortlessly magical.
The soft golden tones of the afternoon mixed with the stunning architecture and gardens around the venue created the dreamiest atmosphere for photos. Every direction we turned seemed to offer another beautiful backdrop, and as the sun slowly started dipping lower, the light became even more magical. Those are always my favourite moments during a shoot — when everything just comes together naturally and effortlessly.
One thing about matric dance season in Cape Town? The venues are BUSY. And this one was no exception 😂 Between matric groups arriving, families gathering for photos, excited friends hyping each other up, and photographers all trying to capture their magic at the same time, there was definitely a lot happening behind the scenes. But honestly, that’s part of the fun and excitement of matric dance afternoons.
Kate and I wandered around the venue searching for all the hidden little corners and secret spots away from the crowds — and I think we found some absolute gems. From quiet hallways with dreamy lighting to flower-filled gardens with mountain views in the background, every location gave us something unique. We were constantly peeking around corners trying to avoid photo bombs and other shoots happening nearby, and honestly, it turned into such a fun adventure throughout the afternoon 😂.

And in my very biased opinion… I think we managed to get the best shots of the evening 😉✨
What I loved most about this session was how natural everything felt. Kate was an absolute dream to photograph and brought such a calm, graceful energy to the shoot. Some of my favourite images are often the candid in-between moments — the laughs while fixing her dress, the excitement before heading into the dance, and those tiny little moments where confidence and nerves all mix together at once. Those are the memories that make these shoots so meaningful.
One of the most special parts of this shoot for me though was being reunited with the incredible Naiker family once again. I’ve had the privilege of photographing them a few times over the years, and every single session with them has always been filled with warmth, kindness, and so much love. There’s something incredibly meaningful about returning to photograph families through different milestones in their lives, and being trusted to capture such important memories never gets taken for granted.
As a photographer, there’s honestly no better feeling than having clients come back to you again and again throughout the years. It creates such a comfortable environment during shoots because there’s already trust there, and it allows everyone to simply relax and enjoy the experience. Seeing familiar faces again always feels less like work and more like catching up with old friends while creating beautiful memories together.
Being invited back to photograph Kate’s matric dance honestly felt like such an honour. Watching families grow and documenting these huge life moments is one of my favourite parts of what I do. It’s more than just taking photos — it’s preserving memories that will be looked back on for years to come.
Matric dance photos are about so much more than dresses and formalwear. They’re about celebrating a season of life that passes by so quickly. It’s about capturing confidence, friendships, excitement for the future, and all the little in-between moments that make the day unforgettable. Years from now, these photos become reminders of such a unique chapter in life — a season filled with excitement, change, and so many dreams for the future.

And if this first shoot of the season is anything to go by, I already know this matric dance season is going to be such a special one 🤍
If you’re planning your matric dance this year and wanting photos that feel natural, magical, and true to you, I’d absolutely love to capture it for you. Cape Town’s matric dance season fills up incredibly quickly, especially during peak weekends, so it’s always a good idea to book your shoot in advance to avoid disappointment 📸✨
