This past Friday, I had the privilege of immersing myself in one of the year’s most anticipated events on the design calendar — Decorex Cape Town 2025. Held under the inspiring theme “The Future of Living,” this year’s show was an ode to innovation, sustainability, and smart living. With over 230 exhibitors from across the continent, each stand told a unique story of how design and technology are evolving hand in hand to shape the homes of tomorrow. As a lifestyle photographer based in Cape Town, I found myself in a true creative haven — every corner was a photograph waiting to be captured.

A Vision of Tomorrow, Today
The concept of The Future of Living was brought to life with exceptional clarity. From interactive smart home setups to elegant, multi-functional living spaces designed for compact urban lifestyles, the event delivered on its promise to showcase what’s next in home living. The integration of smart technology was seamlessly interwoven with contemporary aesthetics. Think motion-sensor lighting paired with organic textures, AI-integrated kitchens surrounded by sustainable materials, and beautiful artwork designed by local artists. This wasn’t just about gadgets — it was about living smarter, more efficiently, and beautifully.
Stands That Sparked the Imagination
Walking through the curated aisles felt like journeying through the blueprints of a visionary future. A few stands that stood out:
The Smart Home Hub: An immersive experience where home automation was brought to life — lighting, blinds, temperature, and even art that changed with mood settings, all controlled via an integrated system. It was futuristic without feeling clinical — a perfect marriage of comfort and tech.
Modular Living Concepts: Flexible and adaptive spaces dominated several exhibitions. Compact living areas that could transform with fold-away furniture, rotating walls, and stackable solutions reminded me of the growing need for adaptable homes in changing cities.
Sustainable Elegance: Many designers embraced eco-conscious materials without sacrificing style. I was particularly drawn to the use of reclaimed woods, low-VOC paints, and biophilic elements that brought nature indoors in calming, intentional ways.
African Artistry Meets Innovation: Several local brands infused traditional African craftsmanship with futuristic design elements. Intricately woven textures were combined with sleek, minimalist furniture, creating a celebration of culture through a contemporary lens.
As a lifestyle photographer, I couldn’t have asked for a more stimulating environment. The lighting, textures, and carefully crafted scenes offered an abundance of inspiration. Each display was like a mini-set, complete with intentional storytelling. The way designers layered their spaces — from colour palettes and textures to shadows and reflections — created dynamic compositions that were a dream to photograph.
Photographing the event felt like capturing the pulse of modern design thinking. I found myself drawn to the interplay between natural elements and digital integration, and how human-centric design is leading the way in this new era. It wasn’t just about pretty spaces — it was about creating environments that feel good to live in.
More Than Just Design — A Community of Innovators
What struck me most was the collaborative spirit that wove through the entire exhibition. Architects, designers, tech developers, artisans, and creatives from all over Africa came together to share ideas, challenge norms, and reimagine what our homes can look and feel like. There was a strong sense of purpose behind each creation — a drive to not only design beautifully but responsibly.
This show wasn’t just for industry insiders. Whether you were a homeowner looking to refresh a space, a budding designer hungry for trends, or simply someone who appreciates great craftsmanship, Decorex Cape Town offered a gateway into a new world of possibilities.

Attending Decorex reminded me why I do what I do. Capturing the essence of human connection with space, light, and lifestyle is at the heart of my photography. This event reinforced the importance of design in shaping not just how we live, but how we feel within our homes.
I left feeling creatively recharged, with memory cards full of visual gems and a head buzzing with new ideas. If “The Future of Living” is anything like what Decorex Cape Town presented, then the future is not only bright — it’s beautifully considered, deeply human, and full of potential.
Whether you're a design lover, a fellow creative, or someone curious about how your living space can work better for you, I can’t recommend this event enough. And if you’re looking to document your space, brand, or lifestyle journey visually — you know who to call.
Until next year, Decorex — I’ll be counting down the days.
