Things Clients Think They Need Before Booking a Photoshoot (But Don't)

"I'll book a photoshoot once I've lost a few kilograms."
"My children are far too wild to sit still for photos."
"I need to buy a whole new wardrobe first."
"My house isn't clean enough for an at-home session."
"What if the weather isn't perfect?"
As a photographer, I hear these concerns all the time. In fact, they are some of the most common reasons people postpone booking a photoshoot. Months turn into years, and before they know it, the moment they wanted to capture has already passed.
The truth is that most people don't delay booking a photoshoot because they don't want one. They delay because they feel like something about their life isn't quite ready yet.
But here's something I wish every person knew:
You do not need to have everything figured out before booking a photoshoot.
Life isn't waiting for the perfect circumstances, and neither should your memories.

Life Changes Faster Than We Realize
One of the greatest privileges of being a photographer is witnessing milestones and seasons of life that can never be recreated.
I've photographed tiny puppies that are now fully grown dogs. I've captured newborns who are now running around as energetic toddlers. I've photographed horses that have since retired and couples who have welcomed children into their families.
Life moves quickly.
The little moments we think we'll always remember eventually become blurred around the edges. The details fade. The way your child held your hand. The way your dog looked at you. The way your horse greeted you at the gate. The way your family fit together in this particular season.
Photographs allow us to hold onto those moments long after they have passed.
Years from now, you won't be looking at your photographs and thinking about whether you should have lost weight first.
You won't notice that your child wasn't perfectly behaved.
You won't care that you wore an outfit you've owned for years.
You'll simply be grateful that the photos exist.
Because the truth is that photographs become more valuable with time.

"I'll Book Once I've Lost Weight"
This is probably the most common reason people postpone a photoshoot.
Many people look at photographs as something they need to earn. They tell themselves they'll book once they've reached a certain goal weight, fit into a certain size, or feel more confident about their appearance.
But here's the reality:
You deserve to exist in photographs exactly as you are right now.
Your loved ones don't see you through the lens of your insecurities.
Your children don't care about the number on the scale.
Your partner doesn't look at you and see the flaws you focus on every day.
Your pets certainly don't care.
The people who love you simply see you.
And one day, those photographs will mean far more than any insecurity you may be carrying today.
Professional photographers also know how to create flattering images. We understand lighting, posing, angles, focal lengths, and positioning. We know how to guide clients in ways that feel natural and comfortable.
You do not need to change your body for a photoshoot.
You do not need to earn your place in front of the camera.
You are already worthy of being photographed.
Because years from now, you'll wish you had more photographs of yourself—not fewer.

"My Children Won't Behave"
If you're a parent, I have some good news:
Your children do not need to sit perfectly still for beautiful photographs.
In fact, some of the most meaningful images happen when children are simply being themselves.
The giggles.
The running.
The cuddles.
The curiosity.
The messy hair.
The spontaneous hugs.
These are the moments that tell your family's story.
As photographers, we don't expect children to behave like miniature adults. We understand that children have big emotions, short attention spans, and endless energy.
A successful family photoshoot isn't about perfectly posed smiles.
It's about capturing connection.
Some of my favourite images have happened in between the "planned" moments—when a child bursts into laughter, runs toward a parent, or shares an unexpected cuddle.
Those moments are real.
Those moments are authentic.
Those moments are worth remembering.

"I Need to Buy New Clothes First"
This is another misconception that stops people from booking.
Many clients believe they need an entirely new wardrobe before stepping in front of the camera.
The reality?
The most successful photoshoots often feature clothes you already own.
The best outfit is not necessarily the newest one.
It's the one that feels like you.
It's the dress you always receive compliments on.
It's the jersey that makes you feel comfortable.
It's the boots you've worn on countless adventures.
It's the outfit that reflects your personality and makes you feel confident.
When people wear clothing that feels natural and comfortable, it shows in the photographs.
They're relaxed.
They're confident.
They're themselves.
Photographs should tell your story, not someone else's.
You don't need designer labels.
You don't need expensive outfits.
You don't need to spend thousands before your session.
You simply need clothing that makes you feel good and reflects who you are.

"My House Isn't Nice Enough"
This concern often comes up with newborn sessions and at-home family photography.
Many people assume their homes need to look like something out of a magazine before inviting a photographer inside.
But that's not what at-home photography is about.
It's about documenting real life.
It's about capturing the place where your family laughs, grows, cuddles, and spends time together.
Professional photographers know how to work with available light and carefully chosen spaces within your home.
We don't need every room to be spotless.
We don't need perfection.
We need connection.
One day, those images become incredibly meaningful because they document not just the people in them, but the environment they called home.
The nursery.
The couch where bedtime stories happened.
The kitchen where family meals were shared.
These details become priceless memories over time.

"The Weather Needs to Be Perfect"
Cape Town weather has a personality of its own.
One minute it's sunny. The next minute it's windy. Then the clouds roll in, and before you know it, you're experiencing four seasons in a single day.
Many clients worry that anything less than bright sunshine will ruin their session.
But photographers often get excited when conditions are less predictable.
Overcast skies are actually one of our greatest tools.
Cloud cover acts like a giant natural softbox, creating beautiful, even light that is incredibly flattering.
Some of the most dramatic and emotional photographs happen under moody skies.
A little wind can create movement and atmosphere.
Mist can add a magical feel.
Even light rain can create something unique and memorable.
Perfect weather doesn't create meaningful photographs.
Connection does.
Emotion does.
Storytelling does.

"I Don't Know How to Pose"
This is perhaps the biggest fear of all.
Almost every client tells me some version of:
"I'm awkward in front of the camera."
"I don't know what to do with my hands."
"I'm not photogenic."
The truth?
Almost nobody arrives knowing how to pose.
And they don't need to.
That is entirely the photographer's job.
A professional photographer doesn't expect you to show up knowing exactly how to stand, smile, or move.
We guide you every step of the way.
We'll give prompts.
We'll create natural interactions.
We'll encourage movement.
We'll help you relax.
Most of the time, the best photographs happen when people stop worrying about posing altogether and simply focus on being present with the people they love.
You don't need to perform.
You don't need modelling experience.
You simply need to show up.
The Biggest Regret Is Waiting Too Long
I've never had a client tell me they regret booking a photoshoot.
But I have spoken to many people who regret waiting.
Waiting until they lost weight.
Waiting until life slowed down.
Waiting until the children were older.
Waiting until they felt more confident.
Waiting until the timing was perfect.
The problem is that life rarely feels perfectly ready.
There will always be another reason to wait.
Another task to complete.
Another goal to reach.
Another excuse to postpone.
Meanwhile, life continues moving forward.
Children grow.
Pets age.
Relationships evolve.
Families change.
Seasons pass.
And moments become memories.

Your Story Is Worth Capturing Right Now
You don't need a new body.
You don't need a new wardrobe.
You don't need perfect children.
You don't need a spotless house.
You don't need perfect weather.
You don't need to know how to pose.
You simply need to decide that this season of life matters.
Because it does.
The laughter, the chaos, the love, the milestones, the everyday moments—these are the things that make up your story.
And your story deserves to be remembered.
Not someday.
Not when everything feels perfect.
But exactly as it is, right now.
A few years from now, you won't remember why you almost didn't book the photoshoot.
You won't remember standing in front of the mirror wondering if you should wait until you've lost a few kilograms. You won't remember stressing about whether your children would sit still long enough for a family photo, or whether your favourite dress was too old, too plain, or too worn to be photographed.
What you will remember is how quickly that season of life passed.
