Visiting Cape Town with Your Friends? Why a Holiday Photoshoot Is Worth It

Planning a girls' trip, birthday getaway or unforgettable holiday with your best friends? Here's why a friendship photoshoot in Cape Town deserves a place on your itinerary.
There are holidays you enjoy, and then there are holidays you talk about for years afterwards.
The spontaneous adventures, the outfits you planned weeks in advance, the inside jokes nobody else understands, the late-night conversations and those moments when you look around at your friends and realise just how lucky you are to have them.
Whether you're travelling to Cape Town for a girls' trip, celebrating a milestone birthday, reuniting with friends from different parts of the world or simply escaping everyday life together, your time here deserves to be remembered.
And what better way to capture it than with a professional friendship photoshoot?
As a Cape Town photographer, I love creating photographs that tell a story. Not just what a place looks like, but what it felt like to be there, who you shared it with and the memories you made along the way.
Because let's be honest: your group chat is going to be full of holiday selfies. But how often does everyone actually get to be in a beautiful photograph together?

Why Book a Friendship Photoshoot in Cape Town?
When you're travelling with your best friends, there's usually no shortage of photographs. Someone is always taking a selfie, another person is filming a video, and there's inevitably one friend who becomes the unofficial photographer for the entire trip!
But while those spontaneous phone pictures are wonderful, they don't always capture the full experience.
Someone is missing from the group shot. The lighting isn't quite right. The background doesn't do justice to the beautiful place you're visiting. Or you spend so much time trying to get the perfect photograph that you forget to enjoy the moment itself.
A professional friendship photoshoot gives you something different.
It's an opportunity to get dressed up, explore a beautiful location and enjoy an experience together while someone else takes care of capturing it all.
You can laugh, pose, walk around, be a little dramatic with your outfits and simply have fun with your friends. I'll guide you throughout the session, helping everyone feel comfortable while capturing a mixture of beautifully composed portraits and natural, spontaneous moments.
And the photographs become more than just pictures from a holiday. They become a reminder of a particular time in your lives, the friendships you shared and the adventure you experienced together.
Years from now, you might forget exactly what you did on a particular afternoon in Cape Town. But a photograph of you and your best friends laughing together, dressed up and feeling fabulous, can bring that memory straight back.
A Spontaneous Shoot, Two Gorgeous Friends and a Very Cool Cobra
Some of the best photography experiences are the ones you never planned.
And my recent shoot with Tykiara and Shiby is the perfect example!
Tykiara was visiting Cape Town all the way from the USA, while her friend Shiby had travelled down from Pretoria. The two were enjoying a holiday in the Mother City when I received a message from Tykiara asking whether I could photograph them.
The timing? Absolutely unexpected.
I'd actually taken the day off because it had been raining in Cape Town all day. The weather wasn't exactly screaming photoshoot opportunity, and I certainly hadn't planned to be working.
But then Tykiara messaged me with this amazing idea, and how could I say no?
Two beautiful women, gorgeous outfits, a misty mountain backdrop and the opportunity to photograph them with an incredible Cobra from Cobra Experiences Cape Town? It sounded far too good to pass up.
So, we decided to embrace the unexpected and see what we could create.
When Cape Town Weather Finally Plays Along
If you live in or have visited Cape Town, you'll know that the weather can keep you guessing!
After rain pouring down for most of the day, we were watching the skies and hoping for just a little window of opportunity.
And thankfully, we got one.
The rain eased, giving us a chance to make this spontaneous shoot happen. The misty mountain scenery created a beautiful atmosphere, and the combination of the stunning outfits and the classic Cobra made the whole experience feel wonderfully cinematic.
The result was something a little different from your usual holiday photographs.
There was style, personality, a touch of luxury and plenty of Cape Town character. The weather had almost convinced me to stay home, but instead, we ended up creating photographs that I'm so glad we didn't miss out on.
It's a lovely reminder that sometimes you just have to take a chance, embrace the unexpected and trust that something beautiful might come from it.
Why I Love Photographing Friends Travelling Together
One of my favourite things about this shoot was getting to capture Tykiara and Shiby enjoying an experience together.
Friendship has its own kind of magic. There's a confidence that comes from being around people who make you feel comfortable, and that often translates beautifully into photographs.
You don't have to be celebrating a birthday or a major milestone to deserve something like this. Sometimes, simply getting to spend time with a friend while exploring somewhere new is reason enough.
For Tykiara and Shiby, this shoot became a little part of their Cape Town adventure. And I hope that when they look back at their photographs, they'll remember not only the beautiful scenery and the Cobra, but also the spontaneity of the day and the fun we had bringing their idea to life.
Tykiara and Shiby, thank you for reaching out and trusting me with such a cool shoot idea. I'm so glad we made it happen!

What Can You Expect From a Friendship Photoshoot With Me?
If you've never booked a professional photoshoot with your friends before, you might be wondering what the experience actually involves.
Do you need to know how to pose? Should you plan matching outfits? What if one friend loves being in front of the camera while another would rather hide behind everyone else?
Don't worry. You don't need to arrive with modelling experience or a perfectly choreographed plan.
My approach is relaxed and lifestyle-focused, with enough guidance to help everyone feel comfortable while leaving room for spontaneous moments.
Depending on your vision, we might capture:
Beautiful group portraits: photographs of everyone together that you can print, frame or share.
Individual portraits: a chance for each friend to have her own moment in front of the camera.
Natural interactions: walking together, laughing, chatting and enjoying the experience.
Editorial-style photographs: stylish poses, beautiful outfits and creative compositions that feel a little more glamorous.
The little in-between moments: those spontaneous expressions and interactions that often become everyone's favourites.
Every group is different, so I like to tailor the session to the people in front of my camera.
If you want a glamorous, dressed-up experience, we can work towards that. If you're after something playful and relaxed, we can embrace that too.
The most important thing is that the photographs feel like you and reflect the experience you want to remember.

The Perfect Occasion for a Friendship Photoshoot
You really don't need a special occasion to book a friendship photoshoot, but if you're looking for an excuse, here are a few wonderful reasons to make it happen.
The Ultimate Girls' Trip
A girls' trip deserves more than photographs taken in a restaurant bathroom mirror!
Whether you're exploring Cape Town for a weekend or spending a whole week discovering the city and surrounding areas, a professional photoshoot can become one of the highlights of your getaway.
Get dressed up, choose a beautiful location and make an experience out of it. You can even plan your outfits around a particular colour palette or aesthetic if you want your photographs to feel coordinated.
Celebrating a Milestone Birthday
Turning 21, 30, 40, 50 or celebrating any other milestone is a wonderful reason to gather your favourite people and create something special.
Instead of simply meeting for dinner, why not start the celebrations with a friendship photoshoot?
It's an opportunity to capture everyone together at this particular stage of life, especially when friends are travelling from different cities or countries to celebrate with you.
A Long-Awaited Reunion
Life gets busy. People move away, careers change, families grow and it becomes harder to find time when everyone is available.
If you've finally managed to get your friendship group together for a Cape Town holiday, that alone is worth celebrating.
A photoshoot gives you a way to document the reunion and preserve a little piece of that time together.
A Holiday With Your Best Friend
Not every trip needs a big celebration behind it.
Perhaps you and your best friend have always wanted to visit Cape Town. Maybe you're exploring South Africa together, or you've simply decided that it's time for an adventure.
You don't need an elaborate reason to have beautiful photographs taken. Being together in a place you love is more than enough.
Where Should You Have Your Friendship Photoshoot in Cape Town?
One of the best things about photographing visitors in Cape Town is the variety of locations available.
Depending on your group's style and the look you're after, we can choose somewhere coastal, colourful, natural or a little more dramatic.
Here are a few ideas to inspire you.
Signal Hill: Dramatic Views and Golden Light
If you love panoramic scenery, Signal Hill can provide a beautiful backdrop for friendship portraits, particularly when the light is soft and the views are clear.
It's a wonderful option for groups who want photographs that capture the scale and beauty of Cape Town.
Bo-Kaap: Colourful and Full of Personality
For something vibrant, Bo-Kaap offers colourful architecture and a distinctive Cape Town atmosphere.
It's a lovely setting for friends who want their photographs to feel playful, stylish and connected to the city they're visiting.
Camps Bay and Blouberg: Coastal Beauty
If you're dreaming of ocean views, beach photographs and mountains in the background, Cape Town's coastline offers plenty of inspiration.
Camps Bay provides an iconic Atlantic Seaboard setting, while Blouberg is known for its spectacular views across the water towards Table Mountain.
The best choice depends on your group's vision, the weather and how busy the location is on the day.
Chapman's Peak and Scenic Drives
For a more adventurous feel, the scenic surroundings along the Cape Peninsula can make a wonderful backdrop for a stylish friendship shoot.
If you love the idea of beautiful outfits, dramatic scenery and a classic car, we can discuss suitable locations and arrangements that bring that vision to life.

A Classic Cobra Experience
If you want something truly different, incorporating a classic car can add a stylish, editorial feel to your photographs.
My recent shoot with Tykiara and Shiby, featuring the Cobra from Cobra Experiences Cape Town, is a perfect example of how a unique element can turn a photoshoot into an experience.
It's a wonderful option for friends who want something beyond the traditional beach or garden portraits.
Any vehicle, venue or special location would need to be arranged with the relevant provider, with access and permissions confirmed in advance.
What Should You Wear for a Friendship Photoshoot?
One of the easiest ways to make group photographs feel cohesive is to coordinate your outfits without making everyone dress identically.
For a classic Cape Town look, you might consider:
Neutral and elegant: Cream, white, beige and soft brown can create a timeless, sophisticated aesthetic, especially against coastal scenery.
Soft and summery: Sage green, dusty pink, light blue and other muted tones can work beautifully for garden or beach settings.
Bold and fashionable: If your group loves colour, embrace it! Vibrant outfits can look fantastic against the colourful streets of Bo-Kaap or provide a striking contrast against a more neutral backdrop.
A coordinated editorial look: If you're planning a shoot with a classic car or dramatic scenery, flowing dresses, complementary fabrics and carefully chosen accessories can create a more fashion-inspired result.
My biggest tip is to agree on a general colour palette before the shoot, while allowing each person to choose an outfit that suits her own style.
You want everyone to feel confident and comfortable, not as though they're wearing a costume.
And if you're visiting from overseas, remember that Cape Town's weather can change quickly. Having an extra layer available is always sensible, particularly for exposed coastal locations.

You Don't Need to Know How to Pose
This is particularly important if someone in your friendship group feels nervous about being photographed.
It's completely normal to feel a little awkward in front of a professional camera, especially if you're used to taking selfies rather than having someone photograph you from different angles.
That's why I don't expect you to arrive knowing exactly what to do.
I'll help guide you through the session, suggesting poses and movements while encouraging you to interact naturally with your friends.
We might start with a few simple group portraits, then move into walking photographs, individual portraits or more creative compositions depending on what you enjoy.
And because you're with people you already feel comfortable around, there's often plenty of laughter and natural interaction to work with.
You don't need to force every smile or make every photograph look perfect. Some of the most memorable images happen when everyone relaxes and forgets about the camera for a moment.
My goal is to make the experience enjoyable, so you can focus on spending time with your friends while I capture the memories.

Why These Photographs Will Mean Even More in the Future
It's easy to think of a friendship photoshoot as something fun to do while you're on holiday, but I think there's something deeper about having photographs of the people who have been part of your life.
Friendships evolve. People move to different countries, start new chapters, get married, have children and find themselves with less time to spend together.
The photographs you take today capture a particular version of your friendship that you won't get back in exactly the same way.
They show who you were, what you looked like, the adventures you shared and the memories you created together.
And if you've travelled from different parts of the world to meet in Cape Town, those photographs become a reminder of the effort you made to spend that time together.
They're something you can print, frame, keep in an album or look back at when you need a reminder of a wonderful chapter in your life.
For me, that's what makes photography so special. It's not just about creating beautiful images in the moment. It's about giving people something meaningful to return to long after the experience has passed.
Visiting Cape Town With Your Friends? Let's Make Some Memories!
From spontaneous shoots on rainy days to carefully planned birthday celebrations, some of the most memorable photography experiences begin with a simple idea and a willingness to make it happen.
Tykiara and Shiby's shoot was a wonderful reminder of that. A last-minute message, a little gap in the weather, two gorgeous friends and an incredible Cobra came together to create something special.
And that's exactly the kind of experience I'd love to create for more visitors exploring Cape Town.
Whether you're planning a girls' trip, celebrating a milestone birthday, reuniting with friends or simply enjoying a holiday together, I'd love to help you capture your time here.
You don't need a special occasion, a perfect plan or experience in front of the camera. Just bring your friends, your ideas and a willingness to enjoy the experience.
Get in touch with Ashley Chapman Photography to discuss your friendship photoshoot in Cape Town, and let's create photographs that remind you of the adventure you shared.
