Why Winter is My Favourite Season for Equine Photography | Christi & Gracie

There’s something truly magical about winter in the Western Cape. While many people associate photography with the bright, sunny days of summer, I find myself counting down the months until winter arrives. The softer light, cooler temperatures, and calm weather create the perfect conditions for capturing authentic, beautiful moments—and Christi and Gracie’s recent equine session is the perfect example of why.

From the moment we stepped into the field, winter worked its magic. The golden sunlight filtered gently through the trees, creating a warm glow without the harshness that often comes with summer afternoons. The light wrapped around both Christi and Gracie beautifully, highlighting every detail while maintaining the soft, dreamy feel that I love so much in my photography.

One of the biggest reasons winter is my favourite shooting season is the quality of the light. The sun sits lower in the sky throughout the day, giving us those gorgeous golden tones for much longer. Instead of battling bright overhead sunlight and harsh shadows, we get a softer, more flattering light that enhances every image naturally. Looking through this gallery, the photographs truly speak for themselves.

Another reason I love winter sessions is the comfort factor. The cooler temperatures make a world of difference for both horses and humans. There’s no rushing to beat the heat, no uncomfortable sweating, and no horses becoming restless from standing in the sun. Everyone is simply more relaxed, allowing genuine moments to unfold naturally in front of the camera.

And then there’s the wind—or rather, the lack of it. Winter days often bring calm, still conditions that are ideal for photography. Hair stays in place, horses remain settled, and we can focus entirely on creating beautiful images without constantly battling the elements. It may seem like a small detail, but it makes an enormous difference during a session.

While the winter conditions certainly helped create these stunning photographs, what truly made this shoot special was the bond between Christi and her beautiful horse, Gracie.

Some relationships don't need words to tell their story. You can see it in the gentle touch of a hand, the way a horse leans into their person, or the quiet moments shared between them when they think nobody is watching.

Throughout the session, it was clear just how much trust and love exists between Christi and Gracie. Every interaction felt natural and effortless. Whether they were standing quietly together or sharing a gentle moment in the fading light, their connection shone through in every frame.

As an equine photographer, these are the moments I treasure most. Beautiful locations and perfect lighting are wonderful, but the real magic comes from capturing the unique relationship between horse and rider. Those are the photographs that become treasured memories for years to come.

Christi and Gracie reminded me exactly why I love what I do. Combined with the incredible winter light, their session was a perfect example of how the simplest moments often create the most meaningful photographs.
