Photographing a Family Where Their Story Unfolds
There is something incredibly special about photographing a family right where their story unfolds.
While beautiful outdoor locations can make wonderful backdrops for family photography, there is something different about photographing a family at home. Their home is where their children have grown up, where everyday routines happen, where memories are made and where everyone feels most comfortable simply being themselves.
This particular Franschhoek family photoshoot was exactly that.
Set against the breathtaking Franschhoek mountains, this beautiful family home provided the most incredible backdrop for a relaxed lifestyle family photography session. With three gorgeous sisters, their parents, a very cute four-legged family member and an absolutely stunning property, there was so much to photograph.
And honestly… when your backyard looks like this, you don't need much else. 🤎⛰️
A Warm Welcome From Three Very Excited Girls
As soon as I arrived at the property, I was greeted by three very excited girls — and the warmest hugs.
There was no awkwardness or hesitation about having a photographer arrive at their home. Instead, they immediately wanted to show me around.
They took me on a little tour of their property, showing me their favourite places and pointing out the spots they wanted to include in their photographs.
And I absolutely loved this.
Rather than me arriving with a strict list of poses and locations, the girls became part of the process from the very beginning.
They showed me their world.
Their favourite places.
The spaces they enjoyed spending time in.
And that helped me understand exactly how I could photograph their family in a way that felt authentic to them.
This is one of the reasons I love lifestyle family photography. Sometimes the best photographs happen when you simply give children the freedom to be themselves.
The Perfect Outfit Colour Palette
I also have to talk about the outfits because Mari absolutely nailed the colour palette. 🤎
The girls' outfits complemented one another beautifully without looking overly matched, and the warm neutral tones worked so well against the natural surroundings of the property.
When choosing outfits for a family photoshoot, I always recommend thinking about the overall colour palette rather than dressing everyone identically.
These photographs are a perfect example of why.
The earthy browns, creams and soft neutral tones worked beautifully with the greens of the garden, the warm tones of the house and, of course, the dramatic mountains in the background.
Everything felt cohesive without looking forced.
And when you combine beautiful styling with a gorgeous natural environment, it makes my job as a photographer so much easier!
Photographing a Family in Midday Sunlight
Now, I'm going to let you in on a little photographer secret…
Midday sunlight isn't exactly my favourite light to work with. 😂☀️
As a natural-light photographer, I absolutely love that soft, warm light you get during the early morning or later afternoon. It tends to be much more forgiving and creates that beautiful glow I love in my photographs.
But sometimes we don't get to choose the time of day.
And this shoot took place right in the middle of the day.
Instead of fighting the light, I worked with it.
As soon as I arrived, I started looking around the property for areas where the light was naturally softer. Trees, buildings, covered areas and pockets of shade became incredibly useful in helping me create flattering light while still keeping the photographs bright and natural.
This is one of the reasons having an experienced photographer can make such a difference.
You don't necessarily need perfect lighting conditions.
You need someone who understands how to find the best light within the conditions you have.
And if I may say so myself… I think we nailed it. 😉
Finding the Best Locations Around Their Home
One of my favourite parts of an at-home family photoshoot is that you don't necessarily need to stay in one location.
We were able to move around the property and create a variety of images without ever needing to leave home.
Some photographs were more traditionally posed, giving the family beautiful portraits together.
Others were much more relaxed — the girls interacting with one another, holding hands, laughing and simply enjoying being together.
We also incorporated the family pup, because let's be honest…
pets are family too. 🐾
Including pets in family photography can sometimes add a little unpredictability to the session, but those spontaneous moments are often some of my favourites.
A family portrait isn't complete if one of the most important members of the family is missing!
Three Sisters, One Beautiful Childhood
One of the things that stood out to me most during this session was the relationship between the three sisters.
There is something incredibly special about photographing siblings together.
The little looks.
The cuddles.
The teasing.
The laughter.
The way they naturally reach for one another.
These are the details that tell the story of their relationship.
And while a photograph of everyone smiling at the camera is lovely, I also want to capture the moments in between.
The moments that parents may not even realise are happening.
Because childhood changes so quickly.
The little girls in these photographs won't always be this age. Their personalities will continue to develop, they'll grow taller, their interests will change and one day these photographs will become a beautiful reminder of the childhood they shared together.
Why At-Home Family Photography Is So Meaningful
There is a reason I love photographing families in meaningful places.
A studio can give you a clean and beautiful backdrop, but your home tells a story.
It contains your memories.
It holds the places your children know and love.
It is where everyday life happens.
And in this case, their home also happened to have one of the most spectacular backdrops imaginable — the Franschhoek mountains.
Years from now, these photographs won't simply remind this family of what everyone looked like.
They'll remind them of where they lived, how the girls interacted, the home they grew up in and the beautiful surroundings that were part of their everyday life.
That makes these photographs so much more personal.
Capturing the Moments Beyond the Posed Portraits
My approach to Franschhoek family photography is always about finding a balance between beautiful portraits and genuine moments.
Of course, I'll guide you when needed. I'll help with positioning, find the best light and make sure everyone looks their best.
But I don't want every photograph to feel like you're simply standing still and smiling at my camera.
I want movement. Connection. Laughter. Cuddles. Walking. Playing.
And all those little moments that happen naturally when a family is simply together.
Because the photographs that often become the favourites aren't necessarily the ones where everyone is perfectly posed.
They're the photographs that make you think:
"That's so them."

You simply need to know how to find the beauty in what is already there.
And there was certainly no shortage of beauty at this family home.
This home. This view. These three girls. Their pup. This stage of their lives. This exact version of their family. 🤎
Those are the things worth remembering.
