There are some photoshoots that feel like more than just another session behind the camera. This was one of those.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing Kayla and her partner before, and I’ve also photographed Kayla on a few occasions over the years. So when she contacted me for another session, I was already excited to see them again. But this time, there was a very special new addition to their little family — Honey, their gorgeous Chow Chow puppy.

And ohhhhh my goodness… what an adorable bundle of fluff she was! 🐻🐾

Honey was quite possibly one of the friendliest, fluffiest little Chow Chow girls I’ve ever had the pleasure of photographing, and I couldn’t wait to get her into the flower fields.

This session also happened to be one of my final flower sessions of the season, making it an extra special way to say goodbye to one of my favourite seasonal locations in Cape Town.

Meeting Honey for the First Time

The shoot started with me meeting Kayla’s new bundle of joy, Honey.

And when I say bundle of joy, I really mean it.

Honey is absolutely covered in the most incredible fluffy fur, with that adorable Chow Chow face that makes you want to squish her immediately. 😂 She was sweet, friendly and full of personality, and within minutes I was completely obsessed with her.

As a Cape Town pet photographer, one of my favourite things about photographing dogs is that every dog brings something completely different to a session. Some are energetic and want to explore everything. Others are a little more reserved. Some are professional models from the moment they arrive.

Honey?

Honey was just happy to be there.

And honestly, that made photographing her even more fun.

I knew immediately that the flower field was going to be the perfect backdrop for her beautiful colouring. The warm tones of her coat against the pink flowers created such a gorgeous combination, and she looked like she belonged right there amongst all the colour.

A New Chapter for Kayla and Her Partner

One of the things I love most about being a photographer is that sometimes clients become part of your photographic journey.

You photograph them once.

Then perhaps again a year or two later.

And then suddenly, they arrive with a new chapter of their lives that you get to document.

That is exactly what made this session with Kayla and her partner so meaningful.

I had photographed them together before, so this wasn't my first time capturing their connection. But this time, their little family had grown — and Honey was very much the star of the show.

There’s something incredibly special about photographing people more than once and getting to watch their lives change and grow.

As a lifestyle photographer in Cape Town, these are the sessions I love. They aren't just about creating pretty photographs. They're about documenting where people are in their lives right now.

The little details. The relationships. The personalities. The new additions.

The moments that you don't realise you'll miss until years later.

This session felt like a little celebration of everything that had changed since I last saw Kayla and her partner.

And of course, Honey had to be included in all of it.

Honey Steals the Show

Let's be honest…

Honey absolutely stole the show. 😂

It would have been impossible for her not to.

That fluffy little face surrounded by fields of pink flowers was simply too much cuteness in one session.

I love incorporating pets into lifestyle photography because I don't want the dog to simply be an accessory in the photographs. They are part of the family, and I want that to come through in the images.

Whether we're capturing cuddles, playful moments, exploring the location or simply allowing your dog to be themselves, I want the final gallery to feel like your family.

And Honey had no problem making herself the centre of attention.

There were plenty of moments where Kayla and her partner were simply interacting with her naturally, and those ended up being some of my favourite photographs from the session.

Those little moments of affection are what make pet photography so special.

Discovering Hidden Gem Locations Around Cape Town

One of my favourite parts of being a Cape Town photographer is constantly looking for beautiful locations that offer something a little different.

Cape Town has no shortage of incredible photography locations. We have beaches, mountains, forests, vineyards, urban streets and beautiful gardens.

But sometimes the most magical locations are the ones that only appear for a short period of time.

This flower field is one of those places.

The flowers arrive for a limited time each year, transform the landscape into a sea of colour and then, almost as quickly as they appeared, they're gone again.

That is exactly why I love photographing seasonal locations.

You can't simply decide to shoot here six months from now.

You have to take advantage of the moment.

And this year, I absolutely did.

I took full advantage of the flower season and photographed several beautiful families, couples, pets and equine sessions amongst the blooms.

Every session looked completely different depending on the people, animals, outfits and light — which is one of the reasons I love returning to seasonal locations.

Why Seasonal Flower Field Photoshoots Are So Special

There is something incredibly romantic about being surrounded by flowers during a photoshoot.

The colours create natural texture and depth in photographs, while the flowers in the foreground can create beautiful soft, dreamy frames around the people and pets.

And because the flowers are only around for a short time, the photographs become a little time capsule of that particular season.

For pet owners especially, I think this is something really special.

Our dogs grow and change so quickly.

One minute you're bringing home a tiny fluffy puppy like Honey, and the next thing you know they're much bigger and you've forgotten just how tiny they once were.

Photographs allow us to preserve those stages.

A flower field session isn't simply about getting a beautiful photograph of your dog.

It's about remembering how small they were, how fluffy they were, how they looked at you and how much joy they brought into your life during that particular chapter.

Natural, Relaxed Pet Photography in Cape Town

My approach to Cape Town pet photography is very natural and relaxed.

I don't expect every dog to sit perfectly still and look at the camera for an entire session.

In fact, I don't want that.

Some of my favourite photographs happen when dogs are simply being themselves.

Sniffing.

Exploring.

Looking at their humans.

Getting excited.

Having a cuddle.

Running around.

And occasionally deciding that the photographer's carefully planned shot is actually the perfect opportunity to do something completely different. 😂

Those moments are real.

And they're often the moments that make you smile years later.

For Honey's session, I wanted to capture her personality as much as her adorable appearance. Her relationship with Kayla and her partner, her playful nature and all those little expressions that make her Honey.

The Perfect Way to End the Flower Season

There was something quite fitting about this being one of my final flower sessions of the season.

After weeks of photographing amongst the blooms, the flowers are now officially bidding us farewell until next year.

And I couldn't have asked for a sweeter session to close things out.

A returning client.

A new chapter.

A gorgeous couple.

And one ridiculously adorable Chow Chow puppy.

It was everything I love about lifestyle and pet photography wrapped into one beautiful afternoon.

The flowers may disappear for another year, but these photographs will remain — capturing this little chapter of Kayla and her partner's lives when Honey was still their fluffy new baby.

And that, ultimately, is why I love what I do.

Photographs aren't just about how something looked. They're about remembering how life felt.
