Jessica & Triston’s Matric Dance at D’Aria Wine Estate

There is something special about photographing a matric dance. It is not just about capturing beautiful photographs of a student dressed up for one important evening — it is about documenting the excitement, the nerves, the friends, the family and all the little moments that make the night memorable.
Jessica and Triston’s matric dance photoshoot at D’Aria Wine Estate was one of those evenings where the atmosphere was buzzing from the moment I arrived. With matriculants arriving for their photographs, families gathering around and everyone dressed up for such an important night, there was a real sense of excitement throughout the venue.
And with D’Aria Wine Estate as the backdrop, we had the perfect setting for their photographs.

A Matric Dance Evening at D’Aria Wine Estate
D’Aria Wine Estate provided such a beautiful setting for Jessica and Triston’s Cape Town matric dance photography session.
The venue was alive with matriculants having their photographs taken, friends catching up and families making sure they got those all-important final photographs before the evening got underway.
There is something quite wonderful about being surrounded by so many young people celebrating the same milestone. Everyone is dressed up, everyone is excited and there is that unmistakable feeling that something important is happening.
For Jessica and Triston, we started their photoshoot amongst the trees, where the natural surroundings created a beautiful, relaxed atmosphere.
Rather than making every photograph feel overly posed, I wanted to capture a mixture of traditional matric dance portraits and more natural moments between the two of them.
Jessica and Triston Amongst the Trees
Jessica looked absolutely stunning in her timeless ivory dress, while Triston's classic black suit created the perfect contrast.
The forested area at D’Aria gave us beautiful greenery, soft light and plenty of depth in the background. It was the perfect place to start their matric dance photoshoot.
We captured them walking together, sharing a few laughs and simply enjoying the excitement of the evening.
Some of my favourite photographs from the session were the ones where they weren't really thinking about the camera. A glance, a smile or a little interaction can often say so much more than a perfectly posed photograph.
We also had a little fun with some movement, including dancing amongst the trees. These photographs added something different to the more traditional portraits and helped show their personalities.
That is one of the things I love most about photographing matric dances — creating photographs that feel elegant but still look and feel like the people in front of my camera.
The Energy of Matric Dance Season
One of the things that stood out about this particular evening was just how much was happening around us.
D’Aria Wine Estate was filled with matriculants having their photographs taken, and there was a real sense of anticipation in the air.
Everywhere you looked, there were beautifully dressed students, parents taking their own photographs, friends laughing together and photographers capturing the occasion.
It reminded me that a matric dance is about so much more than one formal event.
It represents the end of an important chapter of school and the beginning of something new. After years of school, exams, friendships and everything that comes with being a matriculant, this is a chance to dress up, celebrate and enjoy the moment.
As a matric dance photographer in Cape Town, being able to document that excitement is one of my favourite parts of the job.

One Last Stop: Their Car
After spending time amongst the trees, we made our way back towards their car for the final photographs of the evening.
And what a way to finish!
Jessica and Triston had a gorgeous white G-Wagon waiting for them, which made the perfect backdrop for their final portraits.
The white vehicle complemented Jessica's ivory dress beautifully, while Triston's black suit added that classic contrast.
We took advantage of the car for a few final photographs before they headed off to enjoy the rest of their matric dance.
I always love having a few minutes at the end of a session to capture something a little different. By this point, everyone is usually much more relaxed in front of the camera, and those final photographs can often become some of the favourites from the gallery.
Capturing More Than Just Posed Photographs
When photographing a matric dance in Cape Town, my goal isn't simply to create a collection of formal portraits.
Of course, those classic photographs are important. You want the beautiful dress, the suit, the flowers and the photographs with your date.
But I also want to capture the moments in between.
The little smiles.
The nervous excitement.
The way you look at each other.
The laughter when a pose doesn't quite go according to plan.
The movement of the dress.
The friends and family surrounding you.
And those final few photographs before you head off to celebrate.
These are the details that help tell the story of the evening rather than simply documenting what everyone was wearing.
A Beautiful Matric Dance to Remember
Jessica and Triston's matric dance at D’Aria Wine Estate had the perfect combination of elegance, romance and fun.
From the beautiful forest setting to the energy of the venue and their final photographs with the G-Wagon, it was such a lovely evening to capture.
There was a little bit of elegance, a little bit of romance and plenty of excitement — exactly what you want from a matric dance evening. 🤍
For Jessica and Triston, this was one of those nights that marked an important milestone and gave them memories they will hopefully look back on for years to come.
And for me, it was a privilege to be there with my camera to capture it.
