Some photography sessions are special because of the location, the light or the beautiful images we create.

And then there are sessions that feel special for an entirely different reason.

They are special because of the people in front of your camera and the history you share with them.

This beautiful at-home maternity photoshoot in Cape Town was one of those sessions for me.

I have had the absolute pleasure of photographing Michelle for years now, capturing different chapters of her life along the way. So when she reached out to me to photograph her maternity journey with her husband, Jarred, and their two French Bulldogs, it felt incredibly meaningful.

This wasn't simply another maternity shoot.

It was the opportunity to photograph a family growing.

And that is something I will never take for granted.

A Maternity Photoshoot at Home

For this session, Michelle wanted something intimate, relaxed and personal, so we photographed the family in the comfort of their own home.

I absolutely love at-home maternity photography because there is something so much more personal about photographing this incredible stage of pregnancy in a place where you already feel completely comfortable.

There is no unfamiliar studio environment and no pressure to perform.

Instead, we could slow things down and let the session unfold naturally.

We used different areas throughout their home, making use of the beautiful natural light coming through the windows and the warm, neutral tones of their spaces.

The result was a gallery that feels soft, intimate and timeless.

Exactly how I believe maternity photographs should feel.

From Photographing Michelle Over the Years to Photographing Her Growing Family

One of the things I love most about being a photographer is that sometimes clients become so much more than clients.

You get to witness their lives changing.

You photograph their businesses growing, their relationships evolving, milestones being celebrated and new chapters beginning.

And then, one day, you're standing in their home photographing them as they prepare to welcome a new little person into their family.

That is exactly what this shoot felt like.

I've photographed Michelle for years, so being trusted to capture this particular chapter was incredibly special to me.

There is something quite emotional about looking through the camera and realising that you're not just photographing a beautiful maternity session.

You're documenting a moment that represents the beginning of a completely new chapter for this family.

The little details of this season of their lives that they will one day look back on and remember.

The anticipation.

The excitement.

The quiet moments.

The way Michelle carried her growing bump.

And, of course, the two French Bulldogs who were very much involved in everything!

Because the Dogs Are Family Too

If you've followed my work for any length of time, you'll know that I absolutely love including animals in family photography.

And there was no way these two French Bulldogs were going to miss out on their maternity portraits!

They are already such an important part of Michelle and Jarred's family, so naturally they needed to be included in this next chapter too.

I especially love photographs that show the relationship between people and their animals rather than simply placing a pet beside them and asking everyone to look at the camera.

The dogs were allowed to be themselves.

They wandered around, joined their humans, interacted with Michelle and generally did what French Bulldogs do best — completely steal the show!

And honestly?

I wouldn't have it any other way.

There is something incredibly beautiful about documenting your pets alongside your pregnancy because they are part of the story too.

One day, when this little baby is much bigger, these photographs will also show them the furry family members who were there before they arrived.

Capturing the Connection Between Michelle & Jarred

Maternity photography isn't only about photographing the mum-to-be.

It's about capturing the people who are waiting alongside her.

For this session, that meant documenting the connection between Michelle and Jarred as they prepared to become parents.

There is something beautifully quiet about photographs like these.

The little glances.

A hand resting on Michelle's bump.

The excitement of knowing that life is about to change.

Those moments don't need elaborate posing or complicated setups.

They simply need to be noticed.

That's one of my favourite things about lifestyle maternity photography — allowing genuine connection to take centre stage.

The Magic of Natural Light

The natural light in Michelle and Jarred's home was absolutely beautiful.

Soft sunlight streamed through the windows, creating warm highlights and gentle shadows that worked perfectly with the neutral tones of the space.

One of my favourite images from the session is Michelle sitting beside the window with one of her French Bulldogs standing beside her.

The light falls beautifully across her pregnancy silhouette while her dog looks up at her.

It's simple.

It's peaceful.

And it tells so much of the story.

This is why I love working with natural light for maternity photography in Cape Town. Rather than creating an artificial environment, we can use the light that already exists in someone's home to create photographs that feel authentic to them.

Photographing the Little Details

When you're expecting a baby, everything feels like it's happening at once.

There are preparations, appointments, excitement and probably a little bit of nervousness too.

It's easy to focus on the big moments and forget about the tiny details.

But those details are part of the story.

The curve of a growing bump.

Hands resting gently over the belly.

The way a dress falls around the body.

A favourite chair beside a window.

The family dogs curled up nearby.

The room where everything feels calm before life changes forever.

These are the little things I love looking for during a maternity session.

Because when you look back years later, they can transport you straight back to that moment.

Why I Love At-Home Maternity Photography

There is something incredibly intimate about photographing a maternity session at home.

Your home is already part of your story.

It's where you've created your life together. It's where your pets live. It's where you have your everyday routines and where you'll eventually bring your baby home.

Photographing your maternity session there means you're documenting more than pregnancy.

You're documenting the beginning of your family's story in the place where that story is unfolding.

And I think that's incredibly special.

It also means you don't have to worry about travelling somewhere unfamiliar or trying to create a particular atmosphere. We simply find the beautiful pockets of light and meaningful spaces within your home and work with what is naturally there.

A New Chapter for a Family I've Loved Photographing

There are so many reasons this session will stay with me.

Of course, Michelle looked absolutely beautiful.

The photographs are filled with gorgeous light, beautiful details and two very entertaining French Bulldogs.

But what makes this session truly meaningful to me is the journey behind it.

I've photographed Michelle for years.

I've watched her life evolve through my camera.

And now I had the privilege of photographing her as she and Jarred prepare to welcome their little one into the world.

Being invited back to capture another chapter is one of the greatest compliments a photographer can receive.

It means someone trusts you not just with their photographs, but with their memories.

And I am incredibly grateful for that trust.

I cannot wait to see what this next chapter brings for Michelle, Jarred, their two Frenchies and their growing family.

Looking for a Maternity Photographer in Cape Town?

If you're looking for a maternity photographer in Cape Town who loves natural, relaxed and meaningful photography, I'd love to capture this chapter for you.

Whether you want a beautiful at-home maternity photoshoot, a lifestyle session outdoors or a combination of maternity and family photography, your session can be completely personalised around you.

And if you have dogs or other beloved pets, bring them into the photographs.

Because they aren't just pets.

They're part of your family story too. 🤎

The newborn days, the pregnancy, the growing bump and all the little moments in between pass far too quickly.

Photographs allow you to hold onto them.

And sometimes, the most beautiful photographs are the ones that simply show where you were, who you loved and what your family looked like before everything changed.
