An unforgettable Cape Winelands photography experience with Ronald and Mily, featuring a handsome stallion named Charleston, golden-hour light and the beautiful scenery of the South African countryside.

Some photoshoots are about more than simply taking beautiful photographs. They are about creating memories, experiencing something new and capturing a little piece of a journey that deserves to be remembered long after the holiday is over.

When Ronald and Mily travelled all the way from Costa Rica to South Africa, they wanted to do something a little different during their time in Cape Town. As lovers of horses, they dreamed of a romantic couples photoshoot featuring a beautiful horse — something that would combine their connection with each other and their love for these magnificent animals.

And honestly? I couldn't have imagined a more beautiful way to bring their idea to life!

With the stunning Cape Winelands as our backdrop, a gorgeous couple in front of my camera and one very handsome stallion joining us, this session turned into an experience I won't soon forget.

A Couples Photoshoot with a Horse in the Cape Winelands

When Ronald and Mily got in touch with me, I immediately loved their idea. As a Cape Town photographer specialising in equine photography and lifestyle sessions, I absolutely love creating experiences that are personal to the people in front of my camera.

A couples photoshoot doesn't always have to mean posing in front of the ocean or walking along a beautiful beach. Sometimes, the most meaningful photographs come from incorporating something you genuinely love into the experience.

For Ronald and Mily, that something was a horse.

They wanted photographs that captured their time in South Africa while combining their love for horses with a romantic couples session. I knew we could create something really special, and the Cape Winelands offered the perfect setting.

There is something magical about this part of the Western Cape. Between the mountain views, open countryside, beautiful properties and warm afternoon light, it is an incredible location for photography. It has that relaxed, timeless atmosphere that allows photographs to feel natural rather than overly staged.

Of course, we still needed the perfect equine addition to complete their vision!

Meet Charleston: The Gentle Giant Who Stole the Show

This is where Louis from Cape Winelands Riding came to the rescue.

A huge thank you goes to Louis for being so accommodating and helping make this photoshoot possible. Organising a session involving people, horses and a specific creative vision takes a little extra planning, and having someone so helpful on the other side makes all the difference.

Louis made us feel welcome and helped everything run smoothly, allowing us to focus on enjoying the experience and capturing beautiful photographs.

And then there was Charleston.

Wow. Just WOW!

Charleston is a magnificent stallion, and from the moment we started working with him, he made such an impression. He was calm, patient and incredibly sweet, making it a pleasure to photograph him alongside Ronald and Mily.

But I think the best part was how much he seemed to enjoy all the attention!

He was such a gentle giant throughout the session, and there were so many lovely moments where his personality really shone through. Whether he was standing proudly beside the couple or quietly interacting with them, he brought something truly special to every photograph.

As an equine photographer in Cape Town, these are the moments I love most. Horses have such individual personalities, and when you allow them to be themselves rather than expecting them to perform for the camera, you often capture the most beautiful expressions and interactions.

Charleston certainly understood the assignment!

I think the photographs speak for themselves. Between his impressive presence, beautiful markings and gentle nature, he was the perfect addition to Ronald and Mily's photoshoot.

Golden-Hour Light, Mountain Views and Beautiful Memories

One of my favourite things about photography in the Cape Winelands is the light.

As the afternoon sun begins to soften, the landscape takes on a beautiful golden glow. The mountains become warm and hazy in the distance, the grass catches the sunlight, and everything feels a little more magical.

It was exactly the kind of atmosphere I wanted for Ronald and Mily's session.

We made the most of the beautiful surroundings, capturing a mixture of portraits of the couple together with Charleston, individual photographs and moments that allowed each of them to have their own time with him.

I love giving couples variety in their galleries. Alongside those classic portraits where everyone looks at the camera, I want to capture the little interactions that make the experience feel personal.

A hand resting gently against a horse's neck. A shared smile. A quiet moment standing beside an animal that seems to fill the entire frame with its presence.

These are the details that turn a gallery into a collection of memories rather than simply a series of photographs.

And with Charleston being so happy to soak up the attention, we had plenty of opportunities to capture his character, too!

The resulting photographs combined everything I love about equine and lifestyle photography: natural interactions, beautiful light, a relaxed atmosphere and genuine connections.

When the Day Doesn't Go Exactly to Plan

Of course, no photoshoot story would be complete without a reminder that real life doesn't always follow a perfectly organised schedule!

Our day became a little more complicated than expected, and we ended up running behind. When you're travelling internationally and trying to fit special experiences into a holiday, unexpected delays can happen.

But one thing I always want my clients to know is that their photoshoot should be an enjoyable experience, not another thing to stress about.

My approach to photography is relaxed and personal. I want people to feel comfortable in front of my camera, even if they've never had professional photographs taken before. There is no need to worry about knowing how to pose or getting everything perfect.

I'll guide you when needed, give you space to interact naturally and make sure we work together to create photographs that feel like you.

Despite the little hiccup in our schedule, we were still able to enjoy the experience and capture some beautiful memories for Ronald and Mily.

Their kind words afterwards reminded me why this approach matters so much. The photographs are important, of course, but so is the experience of creating them.

More Than a Photoshoot: A Memory of South Africa

For Ronald and Mily, this session was part of their last day in South Africa.

That made it particularly meaningful.

When you travel somewhere new, you collect memories in all sorts of ways. You remember the places you visited, the food you tasted, the landscapes that took your breath away and the unexpected experiences that made the trip yours.

Professional photographs give you something tangible to return to long after you've unpacked your suitcase and settled back into everyday life.

For Ronald and Mily, their gallery now holds a little piece of their South African adventure — the Cape Winelands scenery, the warm afternoon sunshine and their time with Charleston.

I hope that years from now, when they look through these photographs, they will remember not only how beautiful the setting was but also how it felt to be there together.

That is what makes photography so special to me. I get to meet people from different parts of the world, hear their stories and create something personal that they can take home with them.

And sometimes, I get to spend an afternoon photographing an absolutely magnificent stallion, too. What more could a horse-loving photographer ask for?

Kind Words from Ronald and Mily ❤️

One of the most rewarding parts of being a photographer is hearing how the experience felt from my clients' perspective. I was genuinely touched when Ronald and Mily shared their review after receiving their photographs.

Their words meant more to me than they probably realise, and I'm so grateful they took the time to share their experience.

Here is what they had to say:

"There are times when five stars simply don’t feel like enough. From the moment we met Ashley, she made us feel completely comfortable and at ease. She has such a warm, genuine, and beautiful personality, and she has a wonderful way of making you feel like you’ve known her for much longer than you actually have. Her kindness, patience, and professionalism truly made the entire experience so special.Ashley went above and beyond for us. Even when the day became a little complicated and we were running late, she remained incredibly patient, understanding, and positive. She never made us feel rushed or uncomfortable. Instead, she continued to make the experience enjoyable and relaxed. And the photographs… absolutely amazing! She captured not only beautiful pictures, but genuine moments and emotions that we will treasure for years to come. Looking through the photos brought back all the feelings of that special day, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. What makes Ashley truly stand out is that she brings so much more than professional talent. She brings heart, kindness, patience, and a genuine desire to make the people she photographs feel special. That is something you simply cannot teach. We are incredibly grateful that Ashley was part of our last day in South Africa and helped make it so memorable. We would recommend her without hesitation to anyone looking for someone talented, professional, personable, and truly passionate about what she does.Thank you, Ashley, from the bottom of our hearts. You made our experience unforgettable, and we hope our paths cross again someday! ❤️"

Reading this was such a special moment for me. Thank you, Ronald and Mily, for trusting me to capture these memories and for being such wonderful people to photograph. It was an absolute pleasure meeting you both, and I hope our paths cross again one day!
