Some dogs you photograph. Others completely steal your heart.
The second session of my Secret Flower Mini SessionsĀ was one of those sessions that left me smiling long after the camera was packed away.
I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Leigh and her gorgeous Staffies, Gryffin and Penny, amongst the beautiful seasonal flowers here in Cape Town.
And WOW.
These two cuddle bugs came with SO much personality.
Happy faces, wagging tails, endless smiles and enough enthusiasm to make sure there was never a dull moment. šš¾
Honestlyā¦ I think Gryffin and Penny may have stolen the show.
The Second Secret Flower Mini Session šø
After the first Secret Flower Mini Session with Theresia, her husband and their two Beagles, I was already completely hooked on these little sessions.
The whole idea behind the Flower Mini Sessions was to create something short, relaxed and completely focused on enjoying the flowers while they were here.
These blooms only have their moment for a very short time each year, so I wanted to create a photography experience that allowed people to step into them, have some fun and leave with beautiful photographs without committing to a longer session.
And for this second session, Leigh arrived with Gryffin and Penny.
Let's just say these two were ready for their close-up.Ā š
Meet Gryffin & Penny š¾
There are some dogs that take a few minutes to warm up.
And then there are dogs like Gryffin and Penny.
These two were bubbly, friendly, affectionate and completely full of lifeĀ from the moment we started.
And their smiles?!
I genuinely cannot get over how happy these two look throughout their photographs.
You could see their personalities in practically every frame.
They weren't just sitting there waiting for me to take their picture. They were interacting with Leigh, exploring their surroundings, giving me the happiest faces and generally making sure they were involved in absolutely everything.
And I loved every second of it.
The Flowers Were Beautifulā¦ But These Two Stole the Show
The whole reason behind these sessions was the flowers.
And yes, they were absolutely stunning.
The pink blooms created the dreamiest backdrop, with layers of colour surrounding Leigh and the dogs and giving the photographs that soft, springtime Cape Town feeling.
But once Gryffin and Penny arrived?
Sorry, flowers. You had some competition.Ā ššø
Their personalities completely came through in these photographs.
From their big smiles to their wagging tails and all those little moments between Leigh and her dogs, the photographs tell a much bigger story than simply āwe went to a field of flowers.ā
They tell the story of a woman and her two dogs who clearly adore each other.
And that is what I love about pet photography.
Your Dogs Aren't Just Pets. They're Family. š¤
I say this often, but I genuinely believe it:
Your dogs deserve to be in your memories too.
They are part of your everyday life.
They're there for the good days, the bad days, the lazy Sunday mornings and the completely ridiculous moments.
They greet you when you come home.
They make you laugh.
They somehow manage to occupy far more space on the sofa than they should.
And they become part of the family in ways that are impossible to explain to someone who hasn't experienced that bond.
So when you book a pet photoshoot in Cape Town, I don't just want to photograph your dog looking at the camera.
I want to photograph your relationship with them.
The cuddles.
The laughs.
The crazy energy.
The quiet moments.
The ridiculous expressions.
The way they look at you.
Those are the photographs that become meaningful years down the line.
Capturing Personality Is Everything
One of the things I love most about photographing animals is that you can't force personality.
You can ask a dog to sit.
You can ask them to look at you.
You can try to get their attention.
But ultimately, they're going to be themselves.
And that's exactly how it should be.
Gryffin and Penny had no problem showing me who they were.
They were friendly.
They were playful.
They were affectionate.
They were excitable.
And they were very, very happy dogs.
That meant I could simply follow their energy and photograph what naturally unfolded.
Sometimes that meant getting the perfect portrait.
Other times it meant catching Leigh laughing while her dogs were doing something completely different.
And sometimes it was just about getting down amongst the flowers and letting them interact naturally.
Those in-between moments are often my favourites.
A Relaxed Approach to Pet Photography
When I photograph dogs, I don't expect them to behave like professional models.
Because let's be honest...
They're dogs. š
They have their own ideas.
Some are calm and relaxed. Others are energetic. Some are nervous. Some are easily distracted. Some are convinced every smell in the surrounding area must be investigated immediately.
My approach is to work with that rather than against it.
I want your dog to feel comfortable, because when they're comfortable, their personality comes through.
And when their personality comes through?
That's when we get photographs that actually feel like them.
This is particularly important during outdoor sessions, where there are new smells, sounds, people and surroundings to explore.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is connection.
Why I Loved This Session So Much
There was something about this session that just felt happy.
You could see it in Leigh.
You could definitely see it in Gryffin and Penny.
And I think you can feel it when you look through the photographs.
There was no pressure to create some perfectly posed editorial shoot.
We were simply enjoying the flowers and letting the dogs be themselves.
And somehow, those simple moments turned into photographs that I absolutely adore.
I also have to admit that Gryffin and Penny may have left with a little piece of my heart.
It's one of the best and most dangerous parts of being a pet photographer.
You meet someone's dog for 20 minutes and suddenly you're emotionally invested in their entire life.Ā šš¾
Cape Town Pet Photography That Feels Like You
This is exactly why I love being a Cape Town pet photographer.
Every dog brings something completely different to a session.
Every owner has their own relationship with their animals.
And every session becomes its own little story.
Whether you have one dog, two dogs, a whole pack or another beloved animal that you'd like photographed, I want your session to reflect who you are together.
It doesn't have to be perfectly posed.
It doesn't have to be serious.
It doesn't even have to go according to plan.
Sometimes the best photographs come from the moments you didn't plan for.
Just like Gryffin and Penny proved beautifully. šøš¾
