Love, Laughter, Flowers & Two Adorable Beagle Babies | Secret Flower Mini Sessions in Cape Town šøš¾
There are some photoshoots where everything just falls into place, and this was absolutely one of them.
For the very first Secret Flower Mini SessionĀ I hosted in Cape Town, I had the pleasure of photographing Theresia, her husband, and their two beautiful Beagle babiesĀ amongst one of my favourite seasonal flower locations.
And honestly? These two Beagles arrived with PERSONALITY.Ā š
There was love, laughter, a little bit of chaos, plenty of cuddles and a whole lot of gorgeous pink flowers. Exactly the kind of photography session I love.
The First of My Secret Flower Mini Sessions šø
This year, I decided to try something a little different.
I had discovered one of my secret Cape Town flower locations beginning to bloom, and I knew I had a very small window to make the most of it.
These flowers only put on their spectacular display for a short period each year, reaching their beautiful full bloom for roughly two weeks before disappearing again until the following spring.
Rather than offering my usual longer photography sessions, I decided to introduce something completely different: The Secret Flower Mini Sessions.
These were designed to be short, simple and fun. Just 20 minutesĀ to step into the flowers, photograph some beautiful memories and make the most of this very short-lived Cape Town spring backdrop.
And because I specialise in pet photography in Cape Town, I knew I absolutely had to make these sessions pet-friendly.
So when Theresia booked her session and arrived with her husband and their two Beagles, I knew we were going to have fun.
Two Beagles With BIG Personalities š¶š¶
Let's just say these two weren't exactly interested in standing perfectly still and posing for the camera.
And that's okay.
Actually, that's exactly what I want.
One of my favourite things about photographing dogs is that I don't expect them to behave like little models.
They're dogs.
They get excited. They sniff. They look in completely different directions. They investigate everything. They give you the most ridiculous expressions. They suddenly decide they absolutely MUST go somewhere else.
And sometimes, in the middle of all of that, you get the most beautiful photograph.
That's what happened here.
These two adorable Beagle babies brought so much personality to their session, and Theresia and her husband were completely natural with them.
There was no need to force anything.
There were cuddles.
There were laughs.
There were happy dogs.
And there were plenty of moments where their personalities came through beautifully.
A Little Bit of Chaos Makes the Best Photos
One thing I love about lifestyle and pet photography is that the photographs don't always need to look perfectly posed.
In fact, some of my favourite images are the ones where something unexpected happens.
A dog looking directly at their owner.
A ridiculous tongue-out expression.
A cuddle that wasn't planned.
A laugh between two people.
A dog deciding they would rather investigate the flowers than look at my camera. š
Those are the moments that make a gallery feel like your life, rather than a collection of perfectly arranged photographs.
And with two Beagles involved, there was definitely plenty of opportunity for those candid moments.
The flowers created the most beautiful setting around them, but the real story was the relationship between Theresia, her husband and their dogs.
Photographing Your Dogs Amongst the Flowers šø
There's something incredibly special about combining pet photography with the natural beauty of Cape Town.
The flowers gave us layers of colour and texture throughout the images, while the soft natural light created that warm, dreamy look I love.
Rather than simply photographing the dogs standing in a field, I wanted to capture them with their people.
Because that's what makes pet photography meaningful.
Your dog isn't just a pretty subject.
They're part of your family.
They're the ones waiting for you when you get home, following you around the house, making you laugh and somehow taking up most of the bed despite being significantly smaller than you.
So when I photograph pets, I want to capture that relationship too.
The cuddles.
The connection.
The personality.
The slightly chaotic moments.
And all the little things that make them yourĀ dog.
Why I Loved These Mini Sessions So Much
I'll be honest, I wasn't completely sure how these short sessions would work when I first introduced them.
Twenty minutes isn't a long time.
But that's also what made them so much fun.
There was no time to overthink anything.
We simply got into the flowers and started photographing.
I could quickly assess how the dogs were feeling, where the best light was falling and which areas of the flowers were giving us the most beautiful backgrounds.
Then we moved.
We cuddled.
We laughed.
We photographed.
And before we knew it, the 20 minutes were over.
I think that's one of the things I enjoyed most about these sessions. They were short, relaxed and completely focused on making the most of the moment.
Natural Pet Photography in Cape Town
If you've followed my work for a while, you'll know that I'm not particularly interested in stiff, overly posed photographs.
I want your photographs to feel natural, warm and authentic.
That becomes even more important when dogs are involved.
Every dog is different.
Some are calm and happy to sit.
Some are energetic.
Some are nervous in new environments.
Some want to sniff absolutely everything.
And some seem to believe that the camera is actually there specifically to photograph the grass. š
My job isn't to force them into being something they're not.
It's to work with their personality and capture them as they are.
That experience is one of the reasons I love offering pet photography in Cape Town. Having spent years around animals myself, I understand that patience, observation and flexibility are just as important as knowing how to use a camera.
A Cape Town Flower Season to Remember
These flowers are one of those little seasonal reminders of how beautiful Cape Town can be.
They're here.
Then suddenly they're not.
That's what made these sessions so special.
We weren't photographing in an artificial studio or recreating a spring setting. We were taking advantage of something that was genuinely happening in nature for a very short period of time.
And I think that's part of what made these photographs feel so special.
Theresia, her husband and their two Beagles got to experience this little pocket of spring together, and now they have photographs of it that they can keep long after the flowers have disappeared.
Would I Do Secret Flower Mini Sessions Again?
Absolutely.Ā šø
The response to these sessions was incredible, and this first session reminded me exactly why I love creating these little photography experiences.
They combine so many things I love:
Beautiful Cape Town locations. Natural light. People who love their animals. Dogs with big personalities. And photographs that tell a real story.
And after seeing how beautiful these first sessions were, I already know I'm going to be keeping a very close eye on these flowers next season. ššø
Because if there's one thing I've learned, it's that when the flowers decide to bloom, you don't have much time.
