Meet My At-Home Assistant: How Pets Keep Me Grounded as a Photographer

If you’ve ever been on a photoshoot with me, you’ve probably heard me mention my “at-home assistant.” No, I don’t have a full-time studio manager or admin guru trailing behind me — my assistant is a little furball with a curly tail, a big personality, and an even bigger snore.

I’m a proud pug mom. And not just any pug — I share my life with the quirkiest, most lovable little four-legged shadow who keeps me grounded, entertained, and constantly reminded why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

But it doesn’t stop there… I’m also a horse owner. And let me tell you, once you’ve experienced the quiet bond between human and animal — whether it’s a slobbery pug snuggle or your horse’s soft nuzzle after a long day — you start seeing the world a little differently.

In fact, that’s exactly how my photography journey began.

From Pet Lover to Photographer: How My Animals Shaped My Passion

Growing up surrounded by animals, I learned early on that some of life’s most beautiful moments aren’t loud or staged — they’re quiet, authentic, and full of love. Whether it was my horse nickering softly at the gate or the comical way my pugs dramatically flops onto my lap after a long day, these moments stuck with me.

At first, I picked up a camera simply to capture them for myself — snapshots of muddy paws, silly tongue-out smiles, the graceful curve of my horse’s neck under the afternoon sun. But as I shared those images, something magical happened:

People saw their own stories in them.

Suddenly, friends, family, and eventually clients were asking:

✨ “Can you capture my dog like that?”✨ “I want those kinds of photos with my horse.”✨ “Our pets are family — I want memories like this too.”

And just like that, my love for photography and my deep connection to animals merged into what is now my full-time business.

Why Pets Keep Me Grounded (Even When Life Gets Busy)

Running a photography business means no two days are the same. One day I’m capturing branding content by the sea, the next I’m knee-deep in editing wedding photos, and sometimes I’m in the fields photographing golden hour equine sessions.

It’s exciting — but also demanding. That’s where my at-home assistant comes in.

When my pugs curls up next to me during editing marathons or insists we step outside for a break, it’s a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the simple moments — the very essence I strive to capture for my clients.

My horse? She’s my escape and my muse. Long rides, quiet grooming sessions, and that unspoken bond keep me connected to the beauty of real, unscripted life. It’s these experiences that shape my approach to photography — whether I’m working with couples, families, brands, or, of course, beloved pets.

Cape Town’s Pet Photography: More Than Just Cute Pictures

Living and working in Cape Town, I’m spoiled with breath-taking backdrops — golden beaches, wildflower fields, forest trails, and mountain views. But what makes a pet photoshoot truly special isn’t just the scenery — it’s capturing your pet’s personality.

Whether you have a playful pup, a majestic horse, or a camera-shy rescue, my goal is to create a relaxed, fun experience where their true spirit shines through.

🐾 Imagine your dog bounding through the dunes at Noordhoek Beach🐾 A golden hour session with your horse in the comfort of your own yard🐾 Snuggly, at-home portraits of your new puppy in their safe space🐾 Candid moments with your senior pet to treasure forever

I understand that pets aren’t just part of the family — they are family. Their quirks, their bond with you, their unique energy deserve to be documented with care, patience, and love.

Over the years, I’ve realised my fellow pet parents are some of the best people to work with. You understand that life is messy, spontaneous, and rarely goes to plan — and that’s perfectly okay.

During photoshoots, especially with animals, patience is key. Whether your dog decides the grass is too exciting to sit still, or your horse needs a moment to settle, I get it. I’ve been there. That understanding creates a calm, enjoyable atmosphere — and that’s when the magic happens.

The result? Authentic, joy-filled photos of you and your furry (or hooved) companions that feel real, timeless, and full of heart.
