How Long Should Your Photoshoot Be? Choosing the Right Time for Your Unique Session

One of the most common questions I get from clients is: “How much time do I actually need for my photoshoot?” And the honest answer is — it depends entirely on you, your story, and the type of session you’re booking.
Photography isn’t just about showing up, snapping a few images, and calling it a day. It’s about creating an environment where real moments can unfold naturally. That takes time — but more importantly, it takes the right amount of time for each unique session.
Let’s walk through why different shoots require different session lengths, and how choosing the right package can completely transform your experience (and your final gallery).

🐾 Pet & Equine Sessions: Why Time = Trust
When it comes to working with animals, time isn’t just helpful — it’s essential.
For both pet and equine sessions, I always recommend my hour-and-a-half package (or longer). Animals don’t operate on a schedule, and they certainly don’t respond well to pressure. Unlike people, they need time to observe, settle, and feel safe in their environment.
Horses, in particular, are incredibly intuitive and sensitive. If there’s tension, rushing, or impatience, they will pick up on it. And not only does that affect the quality of your images — it can also become unsafe.
These longer sessions allow us to:
Give your animal time to relax and adjust
Capture natural, candid interactions rather than forced poses
Work at a calm, steady pace that keeps everyone safe and comfortable
Patience is the foundation of these shoots. When we remove the pressure of time, we create space for genuine connection — and that’s where the magic happens.
Another important element to consider is that no two animals are the same. Some pets settle within minutes, while others need a slower introduction to the environment, the camera, and even me as the photographer. Horses may react to sounds, movement, or unfamiliar surroundings, and part of my role is to read their behaviour and adapt accordingly. Having extra time means we can pause when needed, reset, and continue when your animal feels ready again.
This approach not only results in better images, but it also creates a far more positive experience for you and your animal — and that energy always shines through in your final gallery.
💑 Couple Sessions: Short, Sweet & Natural
Couple sessions are beautifully different.
Here, a 45-minute session is often more than enough to capture everything we need. Couples tend to settle into the experience much quicker, and these shoots are typically filled with movement, laughter, and natural interaction.
Because there’s less unpredictability compared to working with animals or young children, we can:
Move efficiently between poses and locations
Capture a variety of moments in a shorter time
Keep the energy light, fun, and engaging
It’s the perfect balance of structure and spontaneity — without needing extended time.
What many couples don’t realise is that shorter sessions can actually enhance the experience. With a slightly limited timeframe, there’s a natural flow and momentum that keeps the energy alive. There’s no overthinking, no fatigue — just genuine connection and emotion captured as it unfolds.
👶 Newborn & Family Sessions: Slowing Down for the Little Moments
When little ones are involved, time becomes a completely different story.
Whether it’s a newborn or a toddler, I always recommend an hour or more for these sessions. Babies don’t follow a schedule — and they shouldn’t have to.
We need to allow time for:
Feeding, changing, and comforting
Settling into the environment
Breaks when needed (because they will be needed!)
Rushing a session with a baby often leads to stress — for both parents and the child. But when we slow things down, we create a calm, gentle atmosphere where those soft, intimate moments can naturally unfold.
It’s also important to remember that children respond to energy just as much as animals do. If parents feel rushed or anxious, little ones often mirror that emotion. Giving ourselves more time allows everyone to relax into the experience, making it feel less like a “photoshoot” and more like a natural moment in your day.

💼 Branding Sessions: Telling Your Story Takes Time
Branding sessions are more than just photos — they’re a visual representation of your business.
That’s why I recommend at least an hour and a half (or longer) for these shoots. We’re not just capturing a few headshots; we’re building a complete story around your brand.
Especially if your business involves a service, we need the time to:
Capture your process in action
Create a variety of content for different platforms
Explore multiple setups, outfits, or locations
A rushed branding session limits creativity. But when we allow enough time, we can create a gallery that truly reflects your brand’s identity and connects with your audience.
In many cases, branding sessions also involve a level of planning and experimentation. We might test different lighting, angles, or compositions to find what best represents your brand. That creative freedom simply isn’t possible when time is restricted — and it’s often where the most unique and powerful images are created.
🎓 Matric Dance Shoots: Quick, Polished & Memorable
Matric dance sessions are all about celebrating a milestone — and they don’t require hours to do it beautifully.
A 45-minute session is typically perfect for:
Capturing key portraits
Highlighting outfits, details, and styling
Including a few family or partner shots
These sessions are more structured and focused, making it easy to achieve a stunning variety of images in a shorter time frame.
There’s also a natural excitement and anticipation during these shoots, which helps keep the energy high and the process efficient. Everything is already styled and prepared — all we need to do is capture it beautifully.
✨ Why My Packages Are Designed This Way
Every photoshoot is different — and that’s exactly why my packages are structured to suit each type of session.
There’s no “one-size-fits-all” in photography.
By offering different session lengths, I’m able to:
Respect the natural pace of your shoot
Create a relaxed and enjoyable experience
Deliver galleries that feel authentic, not rushed
It also allows you, as the client, to choose a package that aligns with your needs and expectations. Whether you’re looking for a quick, impactful session or a slower, more immersive experience, there’s an option designed specifically for you.
Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to take photos — it’s to create an experience where you (and everyone involved, including your animals!) feel comfortable, present, and truly yourselves.

Choosing the right session length isn’t about booking more time than you need — it’s about booking enough time to allow your story to unfold naturally.
When we remove the pressure of the clock, something shifts. People relax. Animals settle. Moments become more genuine, more connected, and more meaningful.
Whether it’s the quiet bond between you and your horse, the playful energy of your dog, the tenderness of your newborn, or the personality behind your brand — each moment deserves the space to be captured beautifully.
And that’s exactly what I’m here to do 🤍
