Real People. Real Products. Real Branding: Behind the Scenes of a Branding Photoshoot for Bossi International

Why authentic branding photography matters more than ever, and why your business should think twice before using AI-generated images to advertise its products.
In a world where AI-generated images are becoming increasingly convincing, it's tempting for businesses to take shortcuts when creating visual content for their brands. After all, why organise a professional photoshoot when you can generate a seemingly perfect image in seconds?
Here's the thing: your customers aren't just buying a product. They're buying into your brand, your quality, your reputation and the trust they have in what you offer.
And that trust starts with authenticity.
As a Cape Town branding photographer, I believe there is still enormous value in capturing real people, real products and genuine brand experiences. Professional branding photography allows your customers to see exactly what they're investing in, while giving your business a consistent and recognisable visual identity.
My recent branding shoot for Bossi International was a wonderful example of how authentic photography, creative direction and a little lifestyle storytelling can bring a brand to life.

Behind the Scenes: A Branding Photoshoot for Bossi International
This shoot started with a message from Jodie, who reached out to let me know she was back working with Bossi International. YAY! It was so lovely reconnecting and getting the opportunity to work together again.
We started chatting about the direction we wanted to take with the shoot, the overall aesthetic and how we could create fresh content that showcased the brand's products in a more lifestyle-focused way.
Bossi International is one of South Africa's leading wallet and handbag producers, with a strong focus on keeping its product ranges current through considered design and development.
The goal was to create a collection of images that highlighted the products while giving the brand plenty of versatile content for its website, social media platforms and future marketing campaigns.
And, of course, we wanted to have some fun with it!
Joining us for the shoot were Jodie, Claire (the CEO of Bossi International) and Jess, our lovely model for the day. What an amazing bunch of ladies! Having the right people involved makes such a difference to the energy of a shoot, and this one was filled with great ideas and creativity.
Location One: A Coffee Shop on Kloof Street
We kicked things off at a coffee shop on Kloof Street, Cape Town.
I absolutely love incorporating lifestyle settings into branding photography because they help customers imagine how a product fits into everyday life.
Rather than simply photographing a handbag against a plain background, we wanted to create imagery that felt natural, stylish and relatable.
Think coffee dates, beautiful accessories, everyday essentials and those little lifestyle moments that make a brand feel approachable.
We photographed a selection of Bossi's bags, handbags and wallets, capturing both product details and lifestyle images that could be used across different marketing platforms.
We also captured some fun, short-form social media video content during the shoot.
And this is something worth mentioning if you're a business owner: I also offer short-form video content as part of my branding photography services!
Social media is no longer just about beautiful photographs. Reels and short videos are an important part of how businesses showcase their products, communicate with their audiences and create engaging content.
Having photography and video content captured during the same session means you can walk away with a much more versatile collection of marketing material.
Location Two: Signal Hill – Taking the Brand Outdoors
Once we had captured everything we needed at the coffee shop, we headed up to Signal Hill to finish the shoot.
Cape Town has some incredible locations for lifestyle and branding photography, and I love making use of the city's natural scenery to create something a little different.
For this part of the shoot, we wanted to incorporate the beautiful surroundings while keeping the products as the focus.
We photographed some of Bossi International's newly introduced sunglasses, along with more of their handbags and wallets.
The outdoor setting allowed us to introduce a different look and feel to the collection, giving the brand more variety when it comes to choosing content for social media and marketing.
One of the biggest advantages of planning a branding shoot across multiple locations is that you can create several different visual stories within one session.
Instead of having an entire collection of images that all look the same, you end up with a variety of content that can be used for different campaigns, product launches and social media posts.
And that is exactly what I want my branding photography clients to walk away with: content that works for their business long after the photoshoot is over.

Why Real Branding Photography Is So Important for Your Business
Let's talk about something that has become increasingly relevant in the marketing world: AI-generated imagery.
AI tools can create some incredibly impressive visuals. There is no denying that. They can be useful for brainstorming, creative concepts and certain design applications.
However, when it comes to advertising actual products and representing your business, there is a very important distinction between creating an attractive image and creating an honest representation of your brand.
Imagine a customer seeing a beautiful handbag advertised on your social media page. They love the styling, the colour and the details, so they decide to purchase it.
But when the actual product arrives, it looks completely different from the image they saw.
Perhaps the texture is different, the proportions aren't quite right, or the colour isn't what they expected.
That is where the problem starts.
Customers want to know what they are buying. They want to see the actual product, the real details, the quality and how it looks in everyday life.
If your marketing imagery creates expectations that your real product cannot meet, you risk damaging the trust you've worked so hard to build.
Your brand should never have to pretend to be something it isn't just to look good online.
AI Can Generate an Image, But It Can't Photograph Your Actual Product
One of the biggest advantages of professional product and branding photography is that it showcases exactly what your business offers.
With a real photoshoot, you can capture:
The actual colours, textures and materials of your products.
Accurate product details and finishes.
The real people behind your business.
Your team, workplace and brand personality.
Authentic lifestyle settings that show how products are used.
Genuine customer-facing experiences.
For a business like Bossi International, where product design, quality and appearance are so important, this is particularly valuable.
Customers need to see the actual handbags, wallets and sunglasses they're considering purchasing.
An AI-generated handbag might look impressive, but it doesn't show customers the real craftsmanship, materials or details of the handbag your business actually sells.
And that difference matters.
Your Customers Want to Know Who They're Buying From
Another important part of branding photography is showing the people behind the business.
Your customers aren't only interested in what you sell. They also want to know who you are, what your business stands for and what makes your brand different.
This is why I love incorporating business owners, employees and models into branding sessions.
For Bossi International, having Claire, the CEO, involved in the shoot was a lovely opportunity to bring a little more of the brand's personality into the content.
Real people create real connections.
Whether you're a small business owner, a growing company or an established brand, showing the people behind your business can help make your marketing feel more personal and relatable.
AI-generated people might look convincing, but they cannot replace the genuine people, experiences and stories that make your business yours.
Branding Photography Is an Investment, Not Just Another Photoshoot
One mistake I see businesses make is thinking of professional branding photography as a once-off expense rather than an investment in their marketing.
A properly planned branding session should give you content that can be used across multiple platforms and marketing channels.
For example, a single branding photoshoot can provide:
Website imagery: Professional photographs for your homepage, about page, product pages and other website sections.
Social media content: A variety of images for Instagram, Facebook and other platforms.
Product launches: Fresh photographs to introduce new products and collections.
Marketing campaigns: Images for promotional graphics, advertisements and seasonal campaigns.
Short-form video content: Reels and short clips that bring your products and brand personality to life.
Behind-the-scenes content: Photographs and videos that help your audience connect with the people behind your business.
The trick is to plan your shoot around your marketing needs.
Before the session, I like to understand what a business wants to achieve, what products or services need to be highlighted and how the photographs will be used.
This allows us to create content with a purpose rather than simply taking a collection of pretty pictures.

Why Work With a Cape Town Branding Photographer?
If you're running a business in Cape Town or the surrounding areas, working with a local branding photographer gives you the opportunity to create content that reflects your business while making use of the incredible locations available in the Mother City.
My approach to branding photography is centred around natural light, storytelling, lifestyle imagery and capturing the personality behind each brand.
I don't believe every business needs the same cookie-cutter collection of photographs.
A handbag brand, a guesthouse, a beauty business and an equestrian brand all have completely different audiences and visual identities.
Your photographs should reflect that.
I also understand that businesses need more than just a handful of images to keep their social media accounts active. That's why I offer additional content creation services, including short-form video clips for social media.
Whether you need product photography, lifestyle branding images, team photographs or a combination of photography and video, we can plan a session that gives your business a collection of content to work with.
A Big Thank You to the Bossi International Team

From our coffee shop session on Kloof Street to finishing up with the beautiful Cape Town scenery at Signal Hill, it was such a pleasure bringing the creative direction together.
Thank you to the Bossi International team for trusting me with your branding content and allowing me to bring some fresh ideas to the table.
I loved capturing the new sunglasses collection alongside the gorgeous handbags, bags and wallets, and I'm excited to see how the brand uses the new content across its marketing platforms.
And Jodie, so lovely having you back! Here's to many more creative projects together!
